Johnnie Ruth Clarke
Johnnie Ruth Clarke (July 28, 1919 – May 15, 1978) was an American activist, teacher, and humanitarian. She participated in many different societies, and is credited as the first African American to obtain a doctorate from the University of Florida's College of Education. She served as dean of Gibbs Junior College and as assistant dean of academic affairs at St. Petersburg Junior College, which offers a scholarship in her name. The Johnnie Ruth Clarke Health Center was also named after her. Early life and education Johnnie Ruth Clarke was born on July 28, 1919. Her parents worked at the Sorento Hotel, her father as a head bellman and her mother as a head housekeeper. Gibbs Junior College
Gibbs Junior College was created in 1957 by the Pinellas County Board of Public Instruction to serve African-American students in St. Petersburg, Florida. It was the first and most successful of Florida's eleven new African-American junior colleges, founded in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid the racial integration mandated by the unanimous 1954 Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education decision. It was named for the minister and abolitionist Jonathan C. Gibbs, who opened a private school for freed slaves after the Civil War, and was later Florida's Secretary of State (1868–1872) and then Superintendent of Public Instruction, the first African-American member of the Florida Cabinet. Sorrento Hotel
Hotel Sorrento is an Italian oasis style hotel in Seattle, Washington, United States, located in the historic First Hill neighborhood. The Hotel Sorrento opened in 1909, just before the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition was held in the city. Developed by a Seattle clothier named Samuel Rosenberg, the hotel was under financial distress in its early existence. After suffering losses, in 1910 Rosenberg traded the hotel for a 240-acre orchard in Oregon's Rogue River Valley. Incidentally, Rosenberg's sons, Harry and David, assumed management of the orchard, selling their prized pears in baskets under the famed Harry & David nameplate. Among the hotel's architectural features, the Rookwood tiles composing the fireplace surround in the Fireside Room are especially noteworthy. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of blood disorders typically inherited from a person's parents. The most common type is known as sickle cell anaemia. It results in an abnormality in the oxygen-carrying protein haemoglobin found in red blood cells. This leads to a rigid, sickle-like shape under certain circumstances. Problems in sickle cell disease typically begin around 5 to 6 months of age. A number of health problems may develop, such as attacks of pain (known as a sickle cell crisis), anemia, swelling in the hands and feet, bacterial infections and stroke. Long-term pain may develop as people get older. The average life expectancy in the developed world is 40 to 60 years.
