John Woodhouse (bishop)
John Walker Woodhouse (28 January 188413 March 1955) was an Anglican suffragan bishop from 1945 until 1953. He was born on 28 January 1884 and educated at Charterhouse School, Charterhouse and University College, Oxford before embarking on an ecclesiastical career with a Curate, curacy at St James, Milton, Portsmouth. He was made deacon in Advent 1910 (18 December), by John Randolph (Bishop of Guildford), John Randolph, Bishop suffragan of Guildford, at St Andrew's Church, Farnham, Farnham Parish Church and ordained priest on Thomas the Apostle, St Thomas' Day 1911 (21 December), by Edward Talbot (bishop), Edward Talbot, Bishop of Winchester, at Holy Trinity Church, Guildford. John Woodhouse (British Army Officer)
Lieutenant Colonel John Michael Woodhouse, (29 September 1922 – 15 February 2008) was a British Army officer credited with helping to reform the Special Air Service. Early years John "Jock" Woodhouse was born in Kensington, London, on 29 September 1922, the only son of Brigadier Charles Woodhouse, a former Colonel of the Dorset Regiment. He received his education at Malvern College and commissioned into the Dorset Regiment in 1942. Military career Second World War Woodhouse was not a member of the SAS during the Second World War, he fought in Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy. While commanding with 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment, he received his Military Cross for leding an attack on buildings occupied by tank crews which turned out to be the headquarters of the 16th Panzer Division. In March 1944, a patrol he was commanding was ambushed near Cassino and he was taken prisoner. John Woodhouse (geophysicist)
John Henry Woodhouse is an English geophysicist, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford . He earned a Ph.D in 1975 in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at Cambridge University. After 2 years at Scripps and Cambridge, he joined the Harvard faculty in 1978 as an assistant professor. He was promoted to full professor 4 years later, returning to England in 1990 to take up the appointment as professor at Oxford University. He has researched the variation of seismic wave speed in three dimensions inside the Earth, developing techniques to map the Earth’s interior. He discovered wave speed anomalies associated with plate motion and undertook the first global study of shear velocity in the lower mantle. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2000. John Woodhouse (priest)
John Chappel Woodhouse (1749 – 17 November 1833) was an English Anglican priest who was Archdeacon of Salop from 17 October 1798 until 24 December 1821; and Dean of Lichfield from 1807 until his death. Woodhouse was born at Lichfield, son of William, a physician, and his wife, Mary Mompesson, granddaughter and heiress of William Chappel. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford. He held incumbencies at Donington, Shropshire and Stoke on Trent. In 1805, he published ''Woodhouse's Annotations on the Apocalypse'', which was well received. John Woodhouse Audubon (November 30, 1812, Henderson, Kentucky – February 21, 1862, New York City) was the second son of the famed ornithologist and painter, John James Audubon. Like his father, he was primarily a painter of wildlife, but also did some portraits and genre scenes of the westward migration. Biography He grew up in Kentucky, Ohio and Louisiana, where he attended a school taught by his mother, Lucy. At an early age, he joined his father in his scientific pursuits, becoming an active traveler and gatherer of specimens. In 1833, they traveled to Labrador, after which his father wrote that "John has drawn a few Birds, as good as any I ever made, and in a few months I hope to give this department of my duty up to him altogether".Biography
