John Wood, The Elder
John Wood, the Elder (1704 – 23 May 1754) was an English architect, working mainly in Bath. In 1740 he surveyed Stonehenge and the Stanton Drew stone circles. He later wrote extensively about Bladud and Neo-Druidism. Because of some of his designs he is also thought to have been involved in the early years of Freemasonry. His notable work in Bath included: St John's Hospital, Queen Square, Prior Park, The Royal Mineral Water Hospital, the North and South Parades and The Circus. Wood also designed important buildings outside Bath, including the reconstruction of Llandaff Cathedral, Buckland House, The Exchange, Bristol, and Liverpool Town Hall. He has been described by Nikolaus Pevsner as "one of the outstanding architects of the day". Early life Wood was born in Twerton near Bath, and baptised in St. James's Church (now demolished). John Muir Wood
John Muir Wood, (31 July 1805–25 June 1892) was a Scottish musician, piano maker, music publisher and an early amateur photographer. Early life John Muir Wood was born in Edinburgh on 31 July 1805, the son of Andrew Wood and Jacobina Ferrier. Wood's father was a partner in the Edinburgh piano manufacturing and music publishing firm of Muir, Wood and Company, and later Wood, Small and Company. In 1799 his company won a royal warrant as "''Musical Instrument Makers of His Majesty''." Wood was named for his father's initial business partner, John Muir (d. 1818). His father's later business partner was George Small. Music Wood's interest in music likely stemmed from his father's profession as a piano manufacturer and music publisher in Edinburgh. As a youth in Edinburgh Wood received training as a pianist, eventually travelling to Paris and Vienna to continue his musical studies. John Wood (December 20, 1798 – June 4, 1880) was the 12th governor of Illinois, serving from March 18, 1860, to January 14, 1861. Wood was a founder and the first settler of Quincy, Illinois. Early years Wood was born on December 20, 1798, in Sempronius, New York, in the area now known as Moravia. He was the second child and son of Dr. Daniel and Catherine Crause Wood. His mother became estranged from the family when John Wood was five and moved to Palatine, New York. Wood was sent to live with his older cousin, James, and his wife, Mary Armstrong Wood, in Florida, New York. Wood Jr. (born December 7, 1952) is an American politician who served as a Republican member of the Florida House of Representatives, representing the 41st district, which includes Winter Haven and Haines City in northern Polk County, from 2012 to 2016, and previously represented the 65th district from 2008 to 2012. History Wood was born in Lakeland, and attended the University of Florida, though he did not graduate, instead transferring to Columbia University, where he received a degree in economics in 1974. John Wood (September 6, 1816 – May 28, 1898) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. John Wood (uncle of Alan Wood, Jr.) was born in Philadelphia. He attended the Friends Society schools of Philadelphia, and was employed by his father in the manufacture of tools and agricultural machinery from 1832 to 1840. He was engaged in the manufacture of iron and steel near Wilmington, Delaware, from 1841 to 1844. He moved to Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, in 1844 and engaged in the milling of iron and steel. He was first burgess of Conshohocken. Wood was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth Congress. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1860. He resumed his former manufacturing pursuits and died in Conshohocken in 1898. John Atwood (colonial Administrator)
John Atwood (1576–1644) was an assistant governor of the Plymouth Colony, in the future US state of Massachusetts, in 1638. Biography Atwood's parents were Nicholas Wood (abt. 1539–1586), of Sanderstead Court in the English county of Surrey (now Greater London), and Olive Harman (1548–1603), daughter of the wealthy London merchant, James Harman (abt. 1527–1581). He had nine brothers, two sisters, and one half brother (from his mother's marriage to John Buck in 1592). His baptism record in Saint Martin in the Fields Church in London is dated 20 September 1576 and identifies him as "John Woode." His baptism is also recorded in Sanderstead parish church under the Latin form "Johannes". Despite being baptised as John Woode, he apparently went by the name Atwood, for this is the name he uses in his will prepared in 1643 and is also the name that Governor William Bradford uses when referring to him in his book Of Plymouth Plantation. John Taylor Wood
John Taylor Wood (August 13, 1830 – July 19, 1904) was an officer in the United States Navy and the Confederate Navy. He resigned from the U.S. Navy at the beginning of the American Civil War, and became a "leading Confederate naval hero" as a captain in the Confederate Navy. He was a lieutenant serving aboard when it engaged in 1862, Bell, 2002, p.1 one of the most famous naval battles in Civil War and U.S. Naval history. Bell, 2002, p.41 He was caught in 1865 in Georgia with Confederate President Jefferson Davis' party, but escaped and made his way to Cuba. From there, he got to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he settled and became a merchant. Colonel John Augustus Wood VC (10 June 1818 – 23 January 1878) was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Details Wood was 38 years old, and a captain in the 20th Bombay Native Infantry, Bombay Army during the Persian War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. Thomas Stothard (17 August 1755 – 27 April 1834) was an English painter, illustrator and engraver. His son, Robert T. Stothard was a painter ( fl. 1810): he painted the proclamation outside York Minster of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne in June 1837. Early life Stothard was born in London, the son of a well-to-do innkeeper in Long Acre. A delicate child, he was sent at the age of five to a relative in Yorkshire, and attended school at Acomb, and afterwards at Tadcaster and at Ilford, Essex. Showing talent for drawing, he was apprenticed to a draughtsman of patterns for brocaded silks in Spitalfields. In his spare time, he attempted illustrations for the works of his favourite poets.
