John Wilson Ross
John Wilson Ross (November 1863 – June 30, 1945) was a justice of the Supreme Court of Arizona from November 13, 1918 to January 6, 1919. At 8 weeks, Ross served the shortest tenure in the court's history while his brother, Henry D. Ross, served the longest. Ross was appointed by Governor George W. P. Hunt to replace outgoing Justice Alfred Franklin, who'd been defeated in the 1918 primary by Albert C. Baker. Franklin resigned before the end of his term to take a position as Collector of Internal Revenue for the Arizona–New Mexico District. Sitting in the Supreme Court building in downtown Phoenix, the court consists of a chief justice, a vice chief justice, and five associate justices. Each justice is appointed by the governor of Arizona from a list recommended by a bipartisan commission. Alfred Franklin
Alfred Morrison Franklin (September 30, 1871 – after 1948) was an American jurist and politician. He was the first chief justice of the Arizona Supreme Court and served as a member of Arizona's 1910 constitutional convention. Biography Franklin was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on September 30, 1871, to Anne (Johnston) and Benjamin Joseph Franklin. His early education came in the Kansas City public schools. In 1885, Franklin's father was appointed United States consul to Hankow and the younger Franklin was educated by private tutors while the family lived in China. After being admitted to the bar in 1893, Franklin began practicing law in Phoenix, Arizona Territory. He served as Assistant United States Attorney from 1895 to 1897 and during his father's term as Governor of Arizona Territory acted as the senior Franklin's personal secretary. Fred Sutter
Fred Arthur Sutter Sr. (1874 – November 23, 1941) was an Arizona attorney and politician. He ran several times, unsuccessfully, for governor of the state, and was elected several times to the state legislature. Early life Fred Sutter was born in Marshall, Michigan, before moving to Nebraska with his family. The family then moved to Arizona in 1893. As young man, in 1894, he worked at the smelter in Bisbee, in order to earn money to help pay for his education expenses. In 1896, Sutter was sent to Shattuck's School in Faribault, Minnesota, following a send-off gala in Bisbee, Arizona. He finished attending the school and returned to Bisbee in 1899. He then went to law school, where he received his B. LL. By 1903 he was a practicing attorney in Bisbee, and was a partner in the law firm of Neale and Sutter.
