John Williams (Rochester, NY)
John Williams (January 7, 1807 in Utica, Oneida County, New York – March 26, 1875) was an American merchant and politician from New York. Life Williams was a partner of miller Warham Whitney (1786-1840), whose mill was at the second falls on the Genesee River. Williams married successively two of his partner's daughters, first Caroline (1812-1836) in 1832 and then Olive (1814-1867) in 1840. He served as paymaster to New York's First Regiment of Riflemen starting in 1827. In 1838 he organized the Company of Western New York, known as "Williams' Light Infantry"; they were accepted as a State Battalion of Artillery in 1839 and Williams was commissioned as a major. The battalion was disbanded in 1849. When the city was incorporated in 1834, the mayor was appointed by the city council and had few responsibilities beyond presiding over council meetings. In 1840, the New York State Legislature, New York state legislature passed a law making the mayors of all incorporated cities elective. Various amendments to the city charter during the 19th century gave the mayor additional powers of appointment. Samuel George Andrews (October 16, 1796June 11, 1863) was an American businessman and politician who served one term as and a United States House of Representatives, U.S. Representative from New York (state), New York from 1857 to 1859. Early life and education Samuel G. Andrews was born in Derby, Connecticut, on October 16, 1796. As a youth, he attended the public schools and a classical academy in Chester, Connecticut. He moved to New York State, New York in 1815 with his parents, who settled in Rochester, New York, Rochester. Andrews then became engaged in the mercantile business. Career His political career began as clerk of the State assembly in 1831 and 1832, then as clerk of Monroe County from 1834 to 1837. He was later a member of the board of aldermen in 1838, then secretary of the State senate in 1840 and 1841. Maltby Strong (November 24, 1796 – August 5, 1878) was an American physician, businessman, and mayor of Rochester, New York. Strong, fourth son of Rev. Joseph Strong and Sophia (Woodbridge) Strong, was born in Heath, Mass., November 24, 1796, his father being then settled over the church in that town. He graduated from Yale College in 1819. (Two of his elder brothers were graduated Yale in 1812 and 1815.) After leaving college he attended a course of lectures at the Yale Medical School, and then entered the office of his brother, Dr. Woodbridge Strong, of Boston, as a student, and attended two courses of lectures at Harvard University.
