John William Israel
John William Israel (4 July 185030 May 1926) was Commonwealth Auditor-General for the Australian Government between 1902 and 1926. Life and career Israel was born in Launceston, Tasmania on 4 July 1850 to parents Adelaide Maria and John Cashmore Israel. He was schooled at the private academy of Abraham Barrett. In 1870, Israel joined the Tasmanian Railway Service and was there when the Service was transferred to the government, becoming Tasmanian Government Railways. Israel transferred to the Tasmanian Audit Office in 1882. Israel was appointed as Australia's first Commonwealth Auditor-General, leaving his appointment as State Auditor-General in Tasmania to take up the Australian Public Service position. Imperial Service Order
The Imperial Service Order was established by King Edward VII in August 1902. It was awarded on retirement to the administration and clerical staff of the Civil Service throughout the British Empire for long and meritorious service. Normally a person must have served for 25 years to become eligible, but this might be shortened to 16 years for those serving in unhealthy climates abroad. There is one class: Companion. Both men and women are eligible, and recipients of this order are entitled to use the post-nominal letters 'ISO'. Box Hill Cemetery
Box Hill Cemetery is a cemetery located in Melbourne's eastern suburb of Box Hill, Victoria in Australia. It currently occupies 12.5 ha (31 acres). It is known as the resting place of notable figures from Melbourne and its heritage-registered Columbarium and Myer Memorial. Around 50,000 decedents have been interred since the cemetery was gazetted and commenced operations in 1873. The original 10-acre site was extended in 1886 and again in 1935. The Tasmanian Government Railways (TGR) was the former operator of the mainline railways in Tasmania, Australia. Formed in 1872, the railway company was managed by the Government of Tasmania, and existed until absorption into the Australian National Railways Commission in 1978. Charles Cerutty
Charles John Cerutty (25 November 187019 January 1941) was a senior Australian public servant. He was Commonwealth Auditor-General between 1926 and 1935. Life and career Cerutty was born in Sale, Victoria on 25 November 1870. Cerutty entered the Victorian Public Service in 1888, and was transferred to the Commonwealth Public Service in 1901, the year of Federation. His first Commonwealth position was as a sub-accountant in the Department of the Treasury. In June 1926, Cerutty was appointed the Commonwealth Auditor-General. He delivered his final audit report in October 1935. During his time as Auditor-General, he was outspoken often—particularly in regard to accounting methods, and the increasing funds spent on the old-age and invalid pension systems. Following his final report, strong representations were made by some Members of Parliament that his furlough pay should be cancelled in punishment.
