John West (Australian Poet)
John West was an Australian poet and the author of numerous books of poetry published in Australia between 1994 and his death in 2009. He died just before his ''Selected Poems'' was finalised for publication. Several hundred of his individual poems were published in his lifetime, mostly in Australia but also in the UK. He was raised in the Mallee town of Merbein, Victoria, and worked as an aged care nurse in Melbourne. John West (colonel)
Colonel John West, Jr. of West Point, Virginia (1632–1691) was a planter, commander of the New Kent Militia in the Colony of Virginia, and represented the county in the House of Burgesses, as would his sons. Early and family life John West was born on June 6, 1632 at Bellfield Plantation, York River, Virginia. He was the child of Captain John West, Virginia Governor and his wife Anne Percy, daughter of George Percy and Anne Floyd. His father received an extra land grant because John was the first child of English parents born in the York River area. Career West farmed using enslaved labor. In 1659, West's father died, the last of the four sons of Thomas West, 2nd Baron De La Warr who came to Virginia. In recognition of the family's contributions to the colonial enterprise, the Virginia Assembly passed the following Act: John West also served in the militia from 1652 to 1673, ending with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Admiral of the Fleet Sir John West (28 July 1774 – 18 April 1862) was a Royal Navy officer. West saw action as a junior officer in the first-rate HMS ''Royal George'', the flagship of Admiral Sir Alexander Hood in the Channel Squadron, when he took part in the Glorious First of June and then in the Battle of Groix during the French Revolutionary Wars. As commanding officer of the third-rate HMS ''Excellent'', West served off the coast of Catalonia and landed with a naval brigade with orders to help defend Rosas which was under attack from some 5,000 French troops in an action during the Napoleonic Wars. He took 250 of his ship's men and rescued a group migueletes (Catalan mercenaries) who were at risk of losing their lives, but not before having his own horse shot out from under him. John West (priest)
John West was an Irish Anglican priest. He was Deans of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin in the Church of Ireland from 1864 to 1889. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, he was ordained in 1830 and began his ordained ministry career as curate at Monkstown, County Dublin. He was the Incumbent (ecclesiastical), incumbent at St Ann's Dublin, and then archdeacon of Dublin, the city before his appointment to the eanery, a post he held for 25 years. He died on 5 July 1890. John West (missionary)
John West (November 1778–21 December 1845) was the first Anglican priest in Western Canada and a teacher, reformer and author. A missionary of the Church Missionary Society and a chaplain for the Hudson's Bay Company, the chapel he founded in Winnipeg became St John's Cathedral. Among his converts was Henry Budd, the first Native American ordained an Anglican priest. Early career West was born in Farnham in Surrey in 1778, the son of George West, an Anglican clergyman, and Ann (''née'' Knowles). West became a deacon on 13 December 1804 and was ordained a priest on 21 September 1806. On 2 October 1807 he married Harriet Atkinson (1789-1839) in Wethersfield in Essex, and they had 12 children. John West (pirate)
John West (active 1713-1714) was a minor pirate in the Caribbean, best known for his association with Benjamin Hornigold. History Little is known of John West's life. In 1713 he led one of several small pirate bands attacking the Spanish from their bases in the Bahamas. Hornigold, West, Daniel Stillwell, and John Cockram used canoes and open periauger boats and crews of two dozen men to raid off Cuba and Florida. After several months of raiding they sailed back to Nassau with over £13,000 in loot; West's included slaves from a Cuban plantation. Stilwell was imprisoned but freed by Hornigold while Cockram married and became a trader and supplier to the pirates. John West was an Irish soccer player who played for Bohemians during the 1910s. Born in 1888 in Ulverston to an Irish father and an English mother, the West family relocated to Dublin where John Snr. worked for the Ordnance Survey Ireland, in due course his son John joined him there while also beginning his football career. He was top scorer for Bohs during the 1912/13 season. His goalscoring record for that season showed a total of 23 goals from 31 games in all competitions. This places him in the top 20 goalscoring seasons of all time for Bohemians. This was all achieved without payment as Bohs were strictly amateur during these times. John West (16 October 1844 – 27 January 1890) was an English first-class cricketer, who played thirty eight games for Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1868 and 1876, thirteen games for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) between 1869 and 1883, plus one for the "Left Handed" against the "Right Handed". He was on the MCC groundstaff for twenty years. Born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, West was a left arm fast round arm bowler and left-handed batsman. His best bowling, 7 for 42 for the MCC came against Hampshire, and he also recorded a spell of 5 wickets for 3 runs against Surrey. In all, he took five wickets in an innings on five occasions, and 75 wickets in all at an average of 14.62. John Beattie West (1790 – 27 December 1841) was an Irish Conservative politician and barrister. West was first elected Conservative MP for in 1836 after the result of the 1835 general election was overturned on petition. He held the seat until the next year, when he was defeated at that year's general election. He regained the seat in 1841, but died later that year.
