John Wesley Judd
John Wesley Judd (18 February 1840 – 3 March 1916) was a British geologist. He was born in Portsmouth the son of George and Jannette Judd and educated at the Royal School of Mines, where he later became Professor of Geology. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1877. He was President of the Geological Society between 1886 and 1888 and awarded their Wollaston Medal in 1891. He was later Dean of the Royal College of Science. Notable pupils of his include Edgeworth David, William Fraser Hume and Frederick Chapman. Frederick Chapman (palaeontologist)
Frederick Chapman (13 February 1864 – 10 December 1943) was the inaugural Australian Commonwealth Palaeontologist. Early life Chapman was born in Camden Town, London, England and studied at Royal College of Science, London where he was initially an assistant to John Wesley Judd. Chapman qualified as a teacher of geology and physiography at the college and was encouraged by Judd's study of boring samples from around London. He published ''Foraminifera. An Introduction to the Study of the Protozoa'' (London, 1902) and went on to become a world authority on Foraminifera. Career in Australia Chapman was Palaeontologist to the National Museum, Melbourne, Australia from 1902 to 1927. He published papers on the collection of fossils stored there including sponges, corals and fishes. He then served as the first Australian Commonwealth Palaeontologist 1927-35, where Irene Crespin was his assistant and later succeeded him. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". John Jeyes
John Jeyes (1817–1892) was a chemical manufacturer, most famous for a disinfectant liquid, Jeyes Fluid. His name is also given to an award for chemistry in relation to the environment which is awarded every two years by the Royal Society of Chemistry. John Jeyes was born in Wootton, Northamptonshire, the second son of Philadelphus Jeyes (1780–1828), a retail pharmacist, and Elizabeth, née Ward, daughter of a local landowner, and baptised on 10 June 1817. Jeyes’s first venture into business came when he, his elder brother, also Philadelphus, and James Atkins, a local nurseryman, went into partnership in the early 1840s. It is not known how long this lasted but twenty years later Jeyes, by then married with six children, moved to London; in 1863 he was living in Finsbury. William Fraser Hume
Dr William Fraser Hume FRSE (1867–1949) was a British geologist specialising in Egypt. Life He was born in Cheltenham in England on 1 October 1867 the son of George Hume. He received his early education in Russia and at College Galliard in Lausanne in Switzerland. He then attended the Royal College of Science and Royal College of Mines in the University of London under John Wesley Judd graduating BSc around 1887. He began lecturing at the Royal College of Science in 1890 and received a doctorate (DSc) in 1893. In 1897, he moved to Egypt to assist with a huge geological survey of the whole country and in 1909 became Director of the entire Geological Survey of Egypt. In 1910, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were John Horne, Ben Peach, John Walter Gregory, Sir John Smith Flett and James Ireland. Edgeworth David
Sir Tannatt William Edgeworth David (28 January 1858 – 28 August 1934) was a Welsh Australian geologist and Antarctic explorer. A household name in his lifetime, David's most significant achievements were discovering the major Hunter Valley coalfield in New South Wales and leading the first expedition to reach the South Magnetic Pole. He also served with distinction in World War I. Early life David was born on 28 January 1858, in St. Fagans near Cardiff, Wales, the eldest son of the Rev.
