John Wesley Fribley
John Wesley Fribley (August 3, 1906 – March 20, 2002) was born on a farm near Assumption, Illinois, in 1906, and died in Shelbyville, Illinois, in 2002. He represented the 40th Senate District in the Illinois State Senate from 1934 through 1952. He had significant legislative achievements in transportation, oil and gas regulation, and mine safety. He helped investigate the Centralia mine disaster and was co-sponsor of the Illinois Mine Safety Law. He sponsored the Farm-to-Market Road Law, which constructed township roads and benefited rural towns in Central Illinois. He worked to improve the relationship between Chicago and downstate Illinois. Fribley was a downstate floor leader for former Governor Adlai E. Stevenson. Fribley first attended Illinois Wesleyan University, interested in medicine, but later transferred to the University of Illinois to study law, achieving his degree in 1930. Assumption is a city in Christian County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,155 as of the 2020 census. History Assumption originally was called "Tacusah". The present name is after Assumption Parish, Louisiana. A post office called Assumption has been operation since 1858. Assumption lays claim to the deepest coal mine (abandoned in the 1930`s) in the state at over 1000' below the surface. First National Bank of Assumption (founded in 1900) claims to be the oldest bank in Christian County as it was the only bank in the county to remain open during the Great Depression. Pana is a small town in Christian County, Illinois, United States. A small portion is in Shelby County. The population was 5,199 at the 2020 census. History The area around Pana was first organized as Stone Coal Precinct in 1845. The county's precincts became townships in 1856, and Stone Coal Precinct became Pana Township, Christian County, Illinois. In 1856, the village of Pana was incorporated. The name "Pana" is believed to have been derived from the indigenous tribe, the Pawnee. It developed at the intersection of east–west and north–south railroads, and had supplies of fuel and water for the steam engines of the railroad.
