John Welsh Of Ayr
John Welsh (–1622) was a Scottish Presbyterian leader. He was born in Dumfriesshire and attended the University of Edinburgh to obtain his MA in 1588. He became a minister in Selkirk and married Elizabeth Knox, a daughter of John and Margaret Knox, before leaving Selkirk. Welsh later ministered at Kirkcudbright and Ayr, the latter of which was where he spent five years. His preaching resulted in his imprisonment by the order of King James VI of Scotland. The lawyer Thomas Hamilton wrote to James VI about Welsh, John Forbes, and others; the case was important because many Scottish subjects of James were devoted to the ministers. In 1606 Welsh was exiled to France, where he continued to preach. John Welsh of Ayr was the father of Josias Welsh and the grandfather of John Welsh of Irongray. John Michael Welsh of Irongray (c. 1624–1681) was a leader of the Scottish Covenanter movement. Dunlop an early 20th century writer says: "It is a noteworthy fact that there exists no memoir of John Welsh of Irongray, though from the Battle of Rullion Green till Bothwell Bridge he was the most conspicuous Covenanting minister in Scotland. Had he ''glorified God in the Grassmarket'', or fallen in some scuffle with Claverhouse's dragoons, or even like his friend Blackadder of Troqueer languished in prison on the Bass Rock, some pious hand would have been moved to write his story." Dunlop also wrote: "The events of Welsh's life must be sought for in the pages of Wodrow and Kirkton and in the letters and State papers of the reign of Charles II. John Welsh (7 November 1914 – 21 April 1985) was an Irish actor. Biography Welsh was born in Wexford. After an early stage career in Dublin, he moved into British film and television in the 1950s. His roles included James Forsyte in the 1967 BBC dramatisation of John Galsworthy's ''The Forsyte Saga'' and Sir Pitt Crawley in Thackeray's Vanity Fair, as well as the waiter, Merriman in ''The Duchess of Duke Street'', Sgt. Cuff in ''The Moonstone'' and a brief scene as the barber in ''Brideshead Revisited''. He also appeared in ''Hancock's Half Hour'', '' The Brothers'', ''Prince Regent'', ''To Serve Them All My Days'', 'The Frighteners' ('Bed and Breakfast' episode, 1972), and ''The Citadel'', and played the assistant chief constable in the early series of '' Softly, Softly''. John Welsh (biologist)
John Henry Welsh (August 25, 1901 – November 26, 2002) was an American physiologist who pioneered early work on serotonin as a neurotransmitter in invertebrates. He also studied circadian rhythms, neurosecretion, and neuropharmacology. Welsh was born August 25, 1901 in Boothbay, Maine. He graduated from Berea College in Kentucky in 1922, followed by a M.A. (1922) and Ph.D. (1928) at Harvard University. Welsh was on the staff of Harvard from 1927 until his retirement in 1970. He was Chairman of the Biology Department from 1947-1950, and served important roles at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research during his career. He taught summer courses in invertebrate physiology at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole for nearly 40 years. John Welsh (November 9, 1805 – April 19, 1886) was an American merchant and diplomat who served as US Minister to the Court of St. James. Biography His ancestors were among the early Swedish and English settlers in America. His father, also named John Welsh, moved from the state of Delaware to Philadelphia in 1786, and soon became a prominent merchant in that city. His father trained John and his brothers Samuel and William to mercantile life, and gradually introduced them to his business. John was the youngest, received a good preparatory education, including a classical course, but began the mercantile business, in which he was remarkably successful, at a very early age. John Joseph Welsh (born 10 January 1984) is an English former professional footballer who played as midfielder. Welsh notably played in the Premier League for Liverpool, where he began his career before playing for Hull City, Chester City, Carlisle United, Bury, Tranmere Rovers and Grimsby Town. In 2019 he dropped down to play at semi-professional level with Atherton Collieries before finishing his career with Stafford Rangers. He was captain of the England under-20 team, and has been capped eight times for the under-21s. He represented England U20 at 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship. John Welsh FRS (1824–1859) was a Scottish meteorologist. Life The eldest son of George Welsh of Craigenputtock, he was born at Boreland in the stewartry of Kirkcudbright on 27 September 1824. His father, who farmed, died in 1835, and his mother settled at Castle Douglas, where Welsh received an education. In November 1839, he entered the University of Edinburgh with a view to becoming a civil engineer, and studied under Philip Kelland, James David Forbes, and Robert Jameson. In December 1842, Sir Thomas Makdougall-Brisbane - on the advice of Forbes - engaged Welsh as an observer at his observatory at Makerstoun under then director, John Allan Broun. In 1850 Welsh - who wished to move on - was recommended by Brisbane to William Henry Sykes, chairman of the committee of the British Association which managed Kew Observatory. Jon Welsh (born 13 October 1986) is a Scotland national rugby union team, Scotland international rugby union player most recently with Newcastle Falcons. Welsh was previously at Glasgow Warriors. Welsh is a former Junior boxing champion, in the end choosing to play rugby professionally. Club career Welsh begun playing professionally for Glasgow Warriors around 2008 and was named in the Pro12 Dream Team at the end of the 2011/12 season. One of the high points of Welsh's club rugby career came at Glasgow Warriors. He was a key member of the 2015 Pro12 Grand Final winning squad and played for Glasgow in the playoff final against Irish side Munster Rugby, Munster.
