John Waugh (Rowing, 1945 - 2018)
John Waugh Racing Boats is a recognised rowing boat builder and John Waugh himself was noted by Forbes Magazine as South Africa's leading builder of rowing boats. John was born Arthur John Barrow Waugh in Cape Town in 1945 but spent his childhood growing up on a rural farm in Mwinilunga, Zambia.https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/41718/page/3444/data.pdf He was educated at Whitestone School in Bulawayo and Blundell's School in Devon. James Thompson (rower)
James Thompson (born 18 November 1986) is a South African rower. He attended school at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown. He joined the Tuks rowing club and received a Sport Sciences degree from the University of Pretoria. Thompson won a gold medal in the Men's lightweight coxless four event at the 2012 Summer Olympics, with teammates John Smith, Matthew Brittain, and Sizwe Ndlovu. Thompson retired as a professional rower on 4 February 2017 after competing at the Rock the Boat regatta at Roodeplaat Dam. Mwinilunga
Mwinilunga is a town in the North-Western Province of Zambia. It is the headquarters of Mwinilunga District, one of the province's eleven districts. Location The town lies on the west bank of the ''West Lunga River'', along the Chingola–Solwezi–Mwinilunga Road ( T5 Road of Zambia), which continues north-westwards to Caianda, in Angola. Whitestone School
Whitestone School is an independent, day, preparatory school in for boys and girls in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Whitestone School is a member of the Association of Trust Schools (ATS) and the Head is a member of the Conference of Heads of Independent Schools in Zimbabwe (CHISZ). History M. G. Fleming acquired land and opened Whitestone School in 1942. Whitestone was sold by Mr Fleming to Ruzawi Schools Ltd thus being run as an Anglican Diocesan preparatory school for boys. In 1975, the school was closed as a result of the sudden decline in enrollment, due mainly to the removal of many Zambian pupils. In 1978 all movable property was auctioned and the buildings remained empty for partial occupation by pupils and staff of Cyrene Mission during the civil war years. Blundell's School
Blundell's School is a co-educational day and boarding independent school in the English public school tradition, located in Tiverton, Devon. It was founded in 1604 under the will of Peter Blundell, one of the richest men in England at the time, and moved to its present site on the outskirts of the town in 1882. While the full boarding fees are £38,985 per year, the school offers several scholarships and bursaries, and provides flexi-boarding. Alison Munro
Dame Alison Munro (12 February 1914 – 2 September 2008) was an English civil servant and school headmistress. Life and work Munro was born in Liskeard, Cornwall, and brought up in South Africa by her father, a doctor, and her mother, a concert pianist. The family moved to South Africa for her father's health, but he died four months after his wife. The four surviving children were left money and trustees to look after them. The children used the money to pay for their education and to manage their trustees. Munro's brother was physician Ian Donald, a pioneer of medical and obstetric ultrasound.
