John Walter Nicholls
Sir John Walter Nicholls (4 October 1909 – 25 October 1970) was a British diplomat who was ambassador to Israel, Yugoslavia, Belgium and South Africa. Biography Nicholls was educated at Malvern College and Pembroke College, Cambridge. He joined the Foreign Office with the rank of third secretary in 1932. In 1939 he was seconded to the Ministry of Economic Warfare and was appointed OBE for his work there in the 1941 Birthday Honours. Felstead
Felsted (sometimes spelt Felstead) is a village and civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. The civil parish includes the hamlets of Bannister Green, Bartholomew Green, Causeway End, Coblers Green, Cock Green, Frenches Green, Gransmore Green, Hartford End, Molehill Green, Milch Hill, Thistley Green, Watch House Green and Willows Green. History Felsted is recorded in the ''Domesday Book'' of 1086 as ''Felesteda'', ''Felstede'' and ''Phensteda'' in the Hundred of Hinckford, where it was held by Earl Ælfgar as feu in the time of King Edward. In 1086, Felstead was part of the land of La Trinité of Caen, who held four hides. The fifth hide was no longer in this manor as King William gave three virgates to Roger God-save-the-ladies and the fourth to Geoffrey fitzSalomon. Arthur Snelling
Sir Arthur Wendell Snelling (7 May 1914 – 25 June 1996) was a senior British civil servant and diplomat. He was educated at Ackworth School, Yorkshire, and University College, London. He was Study Group Secretary at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, 1934–1936. He joined the Dominions Office in 1936, and became Private Secretary to the Parliamentary Under-Secretary in 1939. Snelling was Deputy High Commissioner for the UK in New Zealand, 1947–1950, and the Union of South Africa, May 1953–January 1956. The British High Commissioner to South Africa is the head of the United Kingdom's diplomatic mission in the Republic of South Africa. As fellow members of the Commonwealth of Nations, the United Kingdom and South Africa exchange high commissioners rather than ambassadors, and the high commissioner's office in Pretoria is the high commission rather than the embassy. However, from 1961 to 1994 South Africa was not a member of the Commonwealth, so for that time the British head of mission was an ambassador and his office was the embassy. Besides the high commission in Pretoria, the UK maintains a consulate-general in Cape Town. Roderick Barclay
Sir Roderick Edward Barclay (2 February 1909 – 24 October 1996) was a British diplomat who was ambassador to Denmark and Belgium. Career Roderick Edward Barclay was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge. Michael Creswell
Sir Michael Justin Creswell (21 September 1909 - 25 April 1986) was a British diplomat. During World War II, he was an attaché at the British Embassy in Spain. He worked with the Comet Line, Comet Escape Line to help allied airmen who had been shot down over Nazi-occupied Europe to escape to neutral Spain and return to Britain. He was Ambassador to Finland from 1954 to 1958, Ambassador to Yugoslavia from 1960 to 1964, and Ambassador to Argentina from 1964 to 1969. Frank Roberts (diplomat)
Sir Frank Kenyon Roberts (27 October 1907 – 7 January 1998) was a British diplomat. He played a key role in British diplomacy in the early years of the Cold War, and in developing Anglo-German relations in the 1960s. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was educated at Bedales School, Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1930 with first-class honours in history. He entered the Foreign Office in 1930, having been first-placed in the entrance examination. His first overseas posting was to Paris, followed by Cairo where he married Celeste Leila Beatrix "Cella" Shoucair (died 1990). Roberts returned to London in 1937 to work in the central department of the Foreign Office, where, as a still relatively junior official, he was involved in much of the diplomacy with Nazi Germany in the lead-up to World War II.
