John W. Thompson (Manitoba Politician)
John W. Thompson (May 31, 1858 – February 4, 1914) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1910 to 1914, as a member of the Manitoba Liberal Party, Liberal Party. Thompson was born in Ravenswood, Ontario, Ravenswood, Canada West (now Ontario), the son of Malcolm Thompson and Anne McLarty, and was educated at local public schools. He came to Manitoba with his parents in 1879. Thompson taught school for two years, then worked in the agricultural implement business from 1882 to 1886 and operated a livery business from 1890 to 1895. He served as a lieutenant during the North-West Rebellion of 1885 and was a homestead inspector for the Canadian government in 1897. Minnedosa was a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba from 1881 to 2011. It was created in 1881 with the expansion of the province's western boundary. From 1886 to 1888, it was divided into two ridings, Minnedosa East and Minnedosa West. Minnedosa was located in the southwestern region of Manitoba. It was bordered by Russell to the north, Ste. Rose to the east, Turtle Mountain to the east and south, and Arthur-Virden to the south and west. The constituency also surrounded the City of Brandon, which is divided into the ridings of Brandon East and Brandon West. Minnedosa itself was the largest community in the constituency. The 1910 Manitoba general election was held on July 11, 1910 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Manitoba, Canada. The result was a fourth consecutive majority government for the Conservative Party of Manitoba, led by premier Rodmond Roblin. Roblin's electoral machine won 28 seats, against 13 for the opposition Manitoba Liberal Party under new leader Tobias Norris. The Manitoba Labour Party ran a single candidate: Fred Dixon, who was almost elected in Winnipeg Centre with unofficial support from the Liberal Party. William James Roche
William James Roche, (30 November 1859 – 30 September 1937) was a Canadian politician and Conservative Member of Parliament for the Manitoba riding of Marquette in the House of Commons of Canada from 1896 to 1917. Born in Clandeboye, Canada West, the son of W. F. Roche, he was educated in Lucan and London, Ontario, at Trinity Medical College in Toronto and at the University of Western Ontario. Roche practised medicine in Minnedosa, Manitoba. In 1883, he married Annie E. Cook. In 1892, Roche ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Manitoba assembly. He was Secretary of State for External Affairs from 1911 to 1912. He also served as Minister of the Interior (1912–1917), Minister of Mines (1912–1913), and Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs (1912–1917).
