John W. MacDonald
John William MacDonald (October 8, 1900 – May 13, 1983) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Pictou East in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1949 to 1956, and 1960 to 1963. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. Born in 1900 at Avondale, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, MacDonald was a lumber dealer by career. He married Jean Evans in 1930. He entered provincial politics in the 1949 election, winning the Pictou East riding. He was re-elected in the 1953 election. In the 1956 election, MacDonald was defeated by 5 votes, losing to Progressive Conservative William A. MacLeod William Arthur MacLeod (October 31, 1883 – April 12, 1961) was physician and a Canadian politician. New Glasgow is a town in Pictou County, in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It is situated on the banks of the East River of Pictou, which flows into Pictou Harbour, a sub-basin of the Northumberland Strait. The town's population was 9,075 in the 2016 census. New Glasgow is at the centre of the province's fourth largest urban area; the population of the New Glasgow census agglomeration in the 2016 census was 34,487. The Nova Scotia Liberal Party is a centrist provincial political party in Nova Scotia, Canada and the provincial section of the Liberal Party of Canada. The party currently forms the Official Opposition in Nova Scotia, under the leadership of Zach Churchill. The party was in power most recently from the 2013 election until the 2021 election. Origins The party is descended from the pre-Confederation Reformers in Nova Scotia who coalesced around Joseph Howe demanding the institution of responsible government. 1956 Nova Scotia General Election
The 1956 Nova Scotia general election was held on 30 October 1956 to elect members of the 46th House of Assembly of the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It was won by the Progressive Conservatives led by Robert Stanfield. This was the first election the Liberals had fought after the death of their longtime charismatic leader, Angus L. Macdonald. Public Health Minister Harold Connolly became interim leader and premier following Macdonald's death in 1954, but was defeated at a leadership convention by Education Minister Henry Hicks. The convention exposed a sharp religious divide in the Liberal Party; Hicks was a Protestant and Connolly was a Catholic.
