John W. Frederick Jr. (December 13, 1923 – on or about July 19, 1972) was a United States Marine Corps chief warrant officer and veteran of three wars who died in captivity as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. Early life John Frederick was born on December 13, 1923, in Manito, Illinois. Military career World War II to Korea Frederick enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on May 7, 1942, and was trained as a tail gunner on carrier-based bomber aircraft. He flew 40 combat missions as a tail gunner and radar operator on Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bombers. Frederick served in the Pacific Theater for the duration of the war. Following World War II, Frederick served with a contingent of U.S. Marines in China known as " China Marines", sent to occupy northern China from 1945 to 1948 prior to the fall of Chiang Kai-shek in the Chinese Civil War. The Sơn Tây prison camp was a POW camp operated by North Vietnam near Sơn Tây and approximately west of Hanoi in the late 1960s through late 1970 and again in 1975. About 65 US prisoners of war were held there during the middle of the Vietnam War. It was later used to house foreigners captured in South Vietnam during the 1975 Spring Offensive.
