John W. DeGroff
John W. DeGroff (October 12, 1843December 26, 1895) was an American politician, newspaper publisher, and businessman. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate and Wisconsin State Assembly, Assembly, representing Buffalo County, Wisconsin, Buffalo and Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, Trempealeau counties. As a young man, he also served in the Union Army through most of the American Civil War. Biography DeGroff was born on October 12, 1843, in Mentz, New York. He moved to Juneau, Wisconsin in 1848 and to Alma, Wisconsin in 1858. During the American Civil War, DeGroff served in the 25th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Union Army. He took part in the Battle of Atlanta and Sherman's March to the Sea. DeGroff edited the ''Buffalo County Journal'' and the ''Marshfield Times''. Wisconsin's 29th State Senate District
The 29th Senate District of Wisconsin is one of 33 districts in the Wisconsin State Senate. Located in north-central Wisconsin, the district comprises all of Rusk County, Wisconsin, Rusk, and Taylor County, Wisconsin, Taylor counties, along with most of Sawyer County, Wisconsin, Sawyer and Marathon County, Wisconsin, Marathon counties, and parts of northwest Clark County, Wisconsin, Clark County and northern Wood County, Wisconsin, Wood County. Wisconsin State Assembly
The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Representatives are elected for two-year terms, elected during the fall elections. If a vacancy occurs in an Assembly seat between elections, it may be filled only by a special election. The Wisconsin Constitution limits the size of the State Assembly to between 54 and 100 members inclusive. Since 1973, the state has been divided into 99 Assembly districts apportioned amongst the state based on population as determined by the decennial census, for a total of 99 representatives. Battle Of Atlanta
The Battle of Atlanta was a battle of the Atlanta Campaign fought during the American Civil War on July 22, 1864, just southeast of Atlanta, Georgia. Continuing their summer campaign to seize the important rail and supply hub of Atlanta, Union forces commanded by William Tecumseh Sherman overwhelmed and defeated Confederate forces defending the city under John Bell Hood. Union Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson was killed during the battle, the second-highest-ranking Union officer killed in action during the war. Despite the implication of finality in its name, the battle occurred midway through the campaign, and the city did not fall until September 2, 1864, after a Union siege and various attempts to seize railroads and supply lines leading to Atlanta. The 25th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was a United States Volunteers, volunteer infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. During their service, they first participated in the Dakota War of 1862, then spent most of the rest of the war in the Western Theater of the American Civil War, western theater.
