John W. Cranford
John Walter Cranford (July 28, 1859March 3, 1899) was an American attorney and politician from Texas. A Democrat, he was most notable for his service as president pro tem of the Texas Senate and a member of the United States House of Representatives. Biography Cranford was born near Grove Hill, Alabama on July 28, 1859, the son of Dr. James H. Cranford and Caroline (Bettis) Cranford. He received his initial education in Alabama, and after the end of the American Civil War in 1865, Cranford's parents moved to Hopkins County, Texas. Cranford's mother died when he was young, and he was raised by his father. After moving to Texas, Cranford attended the schools of Hopkins County and studied under a private tutor, and worked a variety of jobs to earn room and board and tuition. He studied law under a local attorney, attained admission to the bar, and established a practice in Sulphur Springs, Texas. The 55th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, composed of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, DC from March 4, 1897, to March 4, 1899, during the first two years of William McKinley's presidency. John Levi Sheppard
John Levi Sheppard (April 13, 1852 – October 11, 1902) was an American lawyer, judge, and legislator. Biography Sheppard was born in Bluffton, Alabama on April 13, 1852. As a child he moved with his mother to Morris County, Texas, where he attended the local schools. Sheppard then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1879, and began to practice in Daingerfield. A Democrat, Sheppard served as district attorney of the fifth judicial district from 1882 to 1888, and district judge from 1888 to 1896. He was temporary chairman of the state Democratic convention in 1892, and a delegate to the 1893 Bimettalist convention. He was also a delegate to the 1896 Democratic National Convention. In 1898 Sheppard was elected to the United States House of Representatives from the Fourth Congressional District of Texas. He served in the 56th and 57th Congresses, and held office from March 4, 1899 until his death. Sheppard died in Texarkana, Texas on October 11, 1902. He was buried ... Sulphur Springs, Texas
Sulphur Springs is a city in and the county seat of Hopkins County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census, its population was 15,449. Sulphur Springs is located along the western edge of Northeast Texas. History Sulphur Springs was named so because when the area was first settled, springs of sulfurous water were abundant. Eli Bib, one of the first European-American settlers, ran a store from his cabin, selling staples, whiskey, persimmon beer, and slabs of ginger cake. In 1849, Dr. and Mrs. Davis moved into the area. Dr. Davis envisioned the spot as a future city. In 1850, the residents organized the area's first church (building), church, the Methodist Episcopal. Construction of the church was completed in 1853. In 1852, the Presbyterian Church was organized. At that time, the population of the village was 441.
