John Veryard
John Veryard (14 November 1851 – 5 January 1924) was an Australian businessman and politician who served as a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1905 to 1908 and from 1914 to 1921. Veryard was born in London, England, to Jane (née Callcott) and John Besley Charles Veryard. His parents immigrated to Western Australia when he was an infant. After leaving school, Veryard initially worked in the offices of ''The Inquirer & Commercial News''. He later worked for periods as a cabinetmaker, bootmaker, produce merchant, and builder, before taking over his father's bakery business in 1886. Veryard served on the City of Perth, Perth City Council from 1895 to 1900, and was also on the Municipality of Leederville, Leederville Municipal Council from 1896 to 1900 and from 1902 to 1905, including as mayor in 1904 and 1905. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. The party or coalition that can command a majority in the Legislative Assembly is invited by the Governor to form a government. 1911 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 3 October 1911 to elect 50 members to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader John Scaddan, defeated the conservative Ministerialist government led by Premier Frank Wilson. In doing so, Scaddan achieved Labor's first absolute majority on the floor of the Assembly and, with 68% of the seats (34 of 50), set a record for Labor's biggest majority in Western Australia. The record would stand for nearly 106 years until Labor won 69% of seats (41 of 59) at the 2017 election. Charles Veryard
Charles John Besley Veryard (1900–7 September 1967) was a City of Perth Councillor from 1927 until 1964 and Lord Mayor of Perth from 1964 to his death in 1967. Veryard was also a manager and director of West Cycles. He attended Hale School and played three seasons of football with West Perth Football Club between 1917 and 1920. The Charles Veryard Reserve in Bourke Street, North Perth is named in his honour. In August 1951, Veryard was convicted and fined for tax fraud after understating his income. Orange Order
The Loyal Orange Institution, commonly known as the Orange Order, is an international Protestant fraternal order based in Northern Ireland and primarily associated with Ulster Protestants, particularly those of Ulster Scots heritage. It also has lodges in England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland, as well as in parts of the Commonwealth of Nations, Togo and the United States. 1921 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 12 March 1921 to elect all 50 members to the Legislative Assembly. The incumbent government, led by Premier James Mitchell of the Nationalist Party and supported by the Country Party and National Labor Party, won a second term in government against the Labor Party opposition, led by Opposition Leader Philip Collier. At this election Edith Cowan became the first woman elected to any Australian parliament. Results : 164,688 electors were enrolled to vote at the election, but 6 of the 50 seats were uncontested, with 17,740 electors enrolled in those seats. Of these, 3 were held by Labor, 2 by the Country Party and 1 was held by the National Labor Party.
