John VI Lisle
Sir John VI Lisle (1406-1471) was an English landowner, soldier, administrator, and politician from Wootton on the Isle of Wight. Origins Born about 1406,Aged 22 or more on 17 February 1429, according to his father's IPM. he was the son and heir of the MP Sir John V Lisle and his wife Margaret Bramshott, daughter of John Bramshott. Prominent since the time of King Stephen on the Isle of Wight, then part of Hampshire, the Lisle family wrote their name in Latin as “de Insula” and in French as “de l'Isle”, both meaning “of the Island”. As well as supplying Sheriffs and MPs for the county, two of his ancestors had been summoned to Parliament as barons under King Edward I. John Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset, 3rd Earl of Somerset, KG (25 March 1404 – 30 May 1444) was an English nobleman and military commander during the Hundred Years' War. He was the maternal grandfather of Henry VII. Amesbury Abbey
Amesbury Abbey was a Benedictine abbey of women at Amesbury in Wiltshire, England, founded by Queen Ælfthryth in about the year 979 on what may have been the site of an earlier monastery. The abbey was dissolved in 1177 by Henry II, who founded in its place a house of the Order of Fontevraud, known as Amesbury Priory. The name Amesbury Abbey is now used by a nearby Grade I listed country house built in the 1830s, currently a nursing home. History Amesbury was already a sacred place in pagan times, and there are legends that a monastery existed there before the Danish invasions. There may have been an existing cult of St Melor which led Ælfthryth to choose Amesbury. Melor, the son of a leader of Cornouaille and a boy-martyr, was buried at Lanmeur and venerated in Brittany, but a later tradition claims that some of his relics were brought to Amesbury and sold to the abbess. William de Botreaux, 3rd Baron Botreaux (1389–1462) was a baron, whose holdings were in Somerset and the south-west of England. He inherited from his father the barony by writ of Botreaux as well as substantial family landholdings which included a moiety of the feudal barony of North Cadbury, Somerset, in the parish church of which capital manor he was buried, as he requested in his will. Thruxton is just off the A303 road west of Andover, Hampshire, Andover. It is a village with a Manor House, thatched cottages and village green.
