Two sheriffs are elected annually for the City of London by the Liverymen of the City livery companies. Today's sheriffs have only nominal duties, but the historical officeholders had important judicial responsibilities. They have attended the justices at the Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, since its original role as the court for the City and Middlesex. The sheriffs live in the Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, during their year of service, so that one of them can always be attendant on the judges. John Travers (New South Wales Politician)
John Travers (1866 – 16 April 1943) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1908 to 1934. He was a Labor member when appointed but later resigned to sit as an independent. Early life He was born in Cork to sea captain John Travers and Ellen McCarthy. He migrated to Australia and became a shipwright, serving as secretary of the Shipwrights Provident Union of New South Wales from around 1892 until his appointment to the Legislative Council in 1908. He served as president of the Eight Hour Day Committee and was a member of the central executive of the Labor Party from 1907, until March 1908 when he resigned due to his inability to regularly attend meetings. John Travers (1867–1928)
John Travers (3 May 1867 – 23 August 1928) was an Australian politician. He represented the South Australian House of Assembly multi-member seat of Flinders from 1906 to 1910 and from 1912 to 1918. Travers was born at Rice's Creek at Auburn, South Australia. He later moved to the Pekina area with his family, where he was a farmer for many years. He was a District Council of Orroroo councillor for the Pekina Ward from 1902 to 1905, and was appointed a justice of the peace in 1902. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Flinders at the 1905 election. He was elected to the House of Assembly for Flinders at the 1906 election as a Liberal, although he had earlier approached the United Labor Party about a possible endorsement. He was defeated at the 1910 election. He won the seat back at the 1912 election and was re-elected at the 1915 election. John Leo Travers (20 October 1899 – 23 February 1979) was an Australian lawyer and politician who represented the South Australian House of Assembly seat of Torrens from 1953 to 1956 for the Liberal and Country League. Travers was later appointed as a judge in the Supreme Court of South Australia. He served in that capacity from 14 May 1962 to 19 October 1969. John Travers (composer)
John Travers (ca. 1703 – June 1758) was an English composer who held the office of Organist to the Chapel Royal from 1737 to 1758. Before filling several parochial posts in London he had been a choir boy at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, and a pupil of Johann Christoph Pepusch. Life He received his early musical education in the choir of St. George's Chapel, Windsor. With the support of Henry Godolphin, he was apprenticed to Maurice Greene. He afterwards studied with John Christopher Pepusch, and copied, according to Charles Burney, his style. On Pepusch's death Travers was bequeathed some of his musical library. About 1725 Travers became organist of St. Paul's, Covent Garden, and afterwards of Fulham church. Anita Lorraine Cobby (née Lynch) (2 November 1959 – 2 February 1986) was a 26-year-old Australian woman from Blacktown, New South Wales who was kidnapped while walking home from Blacktown railway station just before 10:00 p.m. on 2 February 1986, and subsequently sexually assaulted and murdered. Two days after being reported missing, Cobby's body was discovered on a farm in Prospect. Investigations led to the arrest of five men who were later convicted of her abduction, rape and murder on 10 June 1987 and each sentenced to life imprisonment, without the possibility of parole, on 16 June 1987. At the time of the killing, Cobby sustained multiple knife wounds and lacerations from barbed wire; her death was a result of a slit throat.
