John Tong Hon
John Tong Hon (born 31 July 1939) is a Chinese prelate of the Catholic Church. A cardinal since 2012, he was auxiliary bishop of Hong Kong from 1996 to 2008, then coadjutor bishop of the diocese for a year, and Bishop of Hong Kong from 2009 to 2017. In January 2019, he became the apostolic administrator of the diocese, in a caretaker role, after the death of his successor, Michael Yeung. Biography Early years Tong Hon was born on 31 July 1939 in Central, Hong Kong, In his youth, Tong Hon spent ten years living in Hua County, Guangdong, before returning to Hong Kong. His father died in China in 1952, at the age of 42. Tong earned a master's degree in philosophy from the Chinese University of Hong Kong before earning both licentiate and a doctorate in dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Urbaniana University. A cardinal ( la, Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae cardinalis, literally 'cardinal of the Holy Roman Church') is a senior member of the clergy of the Catholic Church. Cardinals are created by the ruling pope and typically hold the title for life. Collectively, they constitute the College of Cardinals. British Hong Kong
Hong Kong was a colony and later a dependent territory of the British Empire from 1841 to 1997, apart from a period of occupation under the Japanese Empire from 1941 to 1945 during the Pacific War. Stephen Chow (bishop)
Stephen Chow Sau-yan, SJ (, born 7 August 1959) is a Hong Kong Chinese bishop of the Catholic Church. He is the Bishop of Hong Kong, appointed to the position in 2021 after previously serving as the provincial superior of the Chinese Province of the Society of Jesus. Early life Chow was born in British Hong Kong on 7 August 1959. He studied psychology and philosophy at the University of Minnesota, obtaining a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in Educational Psychology. He subsequently joined the Society of Jesus in 1984, completing his noviceship in 1986. He joined the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy in Dublin and gaining a Licentiate in Philosophy in 1988. Joseph Ha Chi-shing, O.F.M. (Chinese: 夏志誠, born 4 March 1959), is a Roman Catholic bishop and currently the auxiliary bishop of Hong Kong. Biography Ha was born in Hong Kong, and started learning Catholic catechism and was then baptised during his study in secondary school. After his graduation, he worked in the field of banking before finding his vocational calling after a pilgrimage to a Marian shrine. He joined the Order of Friars Minor in 1984, and received basic religious formation in Taiwan. Cathedral Of The Immaculate Conception (Hong Kong)
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception () is a late 19th-century English Gothic revival church that serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong. It is located in the Mid-Levels area of the city at 16 Caine Road. Groundbreaking and construction of the cathedral began in 1883 after the previous cathedral, on Wellington Street, was destroyed by fire. Built from brick and stone, the new cathedral was designed by the London-based architectural firm Crawley and Company. The church opened on 7 December 1888, the day before the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and was consecrated in 1938. Three years later, it was damaged during the Battle of Hong Kong, but remained untouched throughout the subsequent Japanese occupation of Hong Kong.
