John Tinsley Russell
John Tinsley Russell (11 November 1904 – 6 September 1942) was an officer in the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force during the Second World War. He was second in command of the New Zealand Divisional Cavalry, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. He later commanded the 22nd Battalion until he was killed in action in Egypt in September 1942. He was the son of Andrew Hamilton Russell, notable for his leadership of the New Zealand Division during the First World War. Hastings, New Zealand
Hastings (; mi, Heretaunga) is an inland city of New Zealand and is one of the two major urban areas in Hawke's Bay, on the east coast of the North Island. The population of Hastings (including Flaxmere) is (as of with a further people in Havelock North and in Clive. Hastings is about 18 kilometres inland of the coastal city of Napier. These two neighbouring cities are often called "The Bay Cities" or "The Twin Cities". The city is the administrative centre of the Hastings District. The Africa Star is a military campaign medal, instituted by the United Kingdom on 8 July 1943 for award to British and Commonwealth forces who served in North Africa between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943 during the Second World War. Three clasps were instituted to be worn on the medal ribbon: North Africa 1942–43, 8th Army and 1st Army. The ''Official History of New Zealand in the Second World War 1939–45'' is a 48-volume series published by the War History Branch (and its successors) of the Department of Internal Affairs which covered New Zealand involvement in the Second World War.
