John Thornton (Australian Cricketer)
John Thornton (16 January 1835 – 15 December 1919) was an Australian cricketer. He played two first-class cricket matches for Victoria between 1858 and 1860. Biography John Thornton was born in Huddersfield, England on 16 January 1835. He came to Victoria aboard SS ''Great Britain'' in 1853, and settled in Camperdown. He married Agnes Clough in 1862, and they had three children. John Thornton (glass Painter)
John Thornton of Coventry ( fl. 1405-1433) was a master glazier and stained glass artist active in England during the 15th century. The output of his workshop includes some of the finest English medieval glass. Biography The first certain record of Thornton, apart from a possible 1371 reference in Coventry, is his 1405 contract with the Dean of York Minster to glaze the quire east window.Marks, R. ''Stained Glass in England during the Middle Ages'', Routledge, 1993, p.180 The Archbishop of York at the time was Richard le Scrope, a former Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry, and the window was funded by Walter Skirlaw, also previously Bishop of Coventry, so it seems possible both men would have recommended Thornton based on their knowledge of his work in his home town. John Lasarus Williams (29 October 1924 – 15 June 2004), known as John L, was a Welsh nationalist activist. Williams was born in Llangoed on Anglesey, but lived most of his life in nearby Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. In his youth, he was a keen footballer, and he also worked as a teacher. His activism started when he campaigned against the refusal of Brewer Spinks, an employer in Blaenau Ffestiniog, to permit his staff to speak Welsh. John K. Thornton is an American historian specializing in the history of Africa, the African Diaspora and the Atlantic world. He is a professor in the history department at Boston University. Biography Early life and education Thornton was born 3 May 1949 in Fort Monroe, Virginia. His father, Col. Robert L. Thornton, was then serving in the US Air Force, eventually becoming a professor of Business Administration at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. His mother, Mary E. (Kelly) Thornton, a classicist, was also later a professor at Miami U. His sister is novelist Betsy Thornton. His daughter Amara Thornton is a historian of archaeology working in the United Kingdom. John Thornton (1720–1790) was a British merchant and Christian philanthropist who became immensely wealthy through investment in the North Sea Russia trade, and as a result of his Christian faith, gave much of his money away to a huge number of good causes, in so doing becoming the greatest philanthropist of the eighteenth century. Hugely successful in business, it was said that at the time of his death in 1790, Thornton had become the second most wealthy man in Europe. Turtle Gut Inlet was an inlet located in what is now Wildwood Crest, in Cape May County, New Jersey, United States. Geography Turtle Gut Inlet separated Five Mile Beach from Two Mile Beach, both of which are now connected. The inlet was approximately located at the site of Diamond Beach in Lower Township, which is partially on Two Mile Beach and partially on land reclaimed as a result of the closure of Turtle Gut Inlet. History Turtle Gut Inlet is labeled as Turtle Inlet on a 1706 map by John Thornton, and as Turtle Gutt on a map published in 1749 by Lewis Evans. The Thames school of chartmakers was a small group of English nautical chartmakers who plied their trade in streets and alleys leading down to the waterfront on the north Bank of the Thames, east of the Tower of London. Active between 1590 and 1740, they were critically involved in England's maritime affairs, yet the school was not identified by modern scholars until 1959. "At the Signe of the Platt" Its existence was revealed by Spanish historian of science Ernesto García Camarero, who examined a number of 17th-century English charts and noticed some common features. He described them as portolan charts with windrose networks (see illustration). They bore the legend "at the Signe of the Platt" with addresses in or near the Port of London. John Thornton (Leicestershire Cricketer)
John Arthur Curzon Thornton (24 February 1902 – November 1993) was an English cricketer. Thornton was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast-medium. He was born at Stoneygate, Leicestershire. Educated at Uppingham School, Thornton made his first-class debut for Leicestershire against Kent in the 1921 County Championship. He made two further first-class appearances for the county in that season's County Championship, against Warwickshire and Derbyshire. He scored 53 runs in his three matches with a high score of 19 not out, while with the ball, he took a single wicket. He died at Cambridge, Cambridgeshire in November 1993. His brother Frank also played first-class cricket.
