John Thompson (Australian Footballer, Born 1938)
John Laurence Thompson (21 June 1938 – 11 February 1999) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Career Thompson, a centre half-back originally from Benalla, was on a permit from Ararat when he came to Richmond in the 1959 VFL season The 1959 VFL season was the 63rd season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 18 April until 26 September, and comprised an ... and made three league appearances. The following year Ararat cleared him to Richmond, on the agreement that he would cleared back if he didn't become a regular member of the side. He was however able to cement a spot in the team and played 62 more games for Richmond, over four years, which included a stint as vice captain. Benalla is a small city located on the Broken River gateway to the High Country north-eastern region of Victoria, Australia, about north east of the state capital Melbourne. The Hampden Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball league based in South-Western Victoria, with clubs located in towns along or near the Princes Highway from Camperdown to Portland. The league is a major country league. It comprises an amalgamation of the Hampden Football League with the women's netball league with the same teams and playing draw. History The ''Hampden Football League'' was formed in 1930, when the four founding clubs broke away from the Western District FL. Terang and Camperdown did not want to continue to travel to Hamilton because their players were farmers who could not spend all day away from the farm to play football, as they had cows to milk. Warrnambool teams compete in the Hampden Football Netball League, where the football squad has played since 1933. History The origins of the clubs can be traced back to 1861, when a "football" match was played in Warrnambool. The club was formed shortly after, being one of the oldest football clubs in Australia.
