John Swan (engineer)
John Swan (1787–1869) was an engineer who worked for the shipbuilder Charles Gordon & Co. in Deptford. In 1824, he demonstrated the efficacy of the screw propeller using a model boat on a pond in the grounds of Mr Gordon's house in Dulwich. Others present included Captain Forbes of the Royal Navy and Dr. George Birkbeck, who wrote in praise of the invention in ''The Mechanics' Register'', Swan is buried in Abney Park Cemetery and his memorial is listed building, listed for preservation as Grade II. John Swan (Bermudian Politician)
Sir John William David Swan (born 3 July 1935) is a former Bermudian political figure. A real estate developer, a political luminary and a philanthropist, Swan served as Premier of Bermuda from 1982 to 1995. Swan built his reputation through property development. Elected to Parliament in 1972, the former Premier established the island as a major offshore financial center, and under Swan's stewardship the Government completed in excess of 20 major projects. In 1985 Swan led the negotiations and the completion of the Tax Treaty with the United States. The agreement resulted in the development of the insurance and reinsurance industries. The Bermuda delegation held several meetings with the most senior officials in the U.S. Government including the President, Vice-President, Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of State and National Security Advisor in order to successfully implement a tax treaty between Bermuda and the United States. John Swan (British Politician)
John Edmund Swan (1877 – 9 February 1956) was a Labour Party politician in England. Swan was born in Dipton, County Durham. He became a coal miner, and was later elected as checkweighman, also becoming active in the Durham Miners' Association (DMA). He was elected at the 1918 general election as Member of Parliament (MP) for Barnard Castle in County Durham, but lost his seat at the 1922 election to the Conservative Party candidate, John Edwin Rogerson. Out of Parliament, Swan devoted his time to the DMA, and he was elected as its general secretary in 1935, serving until 1945. John Macallan Swan
John Macallan Swan (9 December 1846 – 14 February 1910) was an English painter and sculptor. Biography Swan was born in Brentford, Middlesex, on 9 December 1846. He received his art training first in England at the Worcester and Lambeth schools of art and the Royal Academy schools, and subsequently in Paris, in the studios of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Emmanuel Frémiet. He began to exhibit at the Academy in 1878. His picture ''The Prodigal Son'', bought for the Chantrey collection in 1889 (and now in the Tate Britain), established his reputation as an artist. He married artist Mary Rankin Swan in Ireland in 1884 and had two children with her, including sculptor Mary Alice Swan. He was elected associate in the Royal Academy in 1894 and academician in 1905. John Sydney Swan (12 January 1874 – 18 April 1936) (sometimes seen as Sidney) was a New Zealand architect, the designer of houses and churches in Wellington, New Zealand. He was articled to Frederick de Jersey Clere and was at one time a partner with Clere. Buildings he designed include Erskine College and St Gerard's Church and Monastery, and various commercial buildings, houses and Wellington Harbour Board buildings. He was born and died in Wellington, and built the house, ''The Moorings'' in Glenbervie Terrace, Thorndon in 1905. John Alfred Swan was an Anglican priest in the twentieth century. Swan was educated at the Australian College of Theology. He was ordained deacon in 1940, and priest in 1941.
