John Strange (Canadian Politician)
John Strange (September 2, 1788 – October 14, 1840) was a merchant and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in East Kilbride, Scotland in 1788 and emigrated with several siblings around 1805. He served during the War of 1812 as a volunteer in the Canadian Militia, being a Lieutenant of the first Regiment of the Royal Lanarkshire Light Infantry Militia. He was present at the Battle of Lundy's Lane and at Fort Erie. At the close of the war, John settled in Kingston and became Major in the First Regiment of the Frontenac Militia. In 1818, he married Mary McGill in Albany, New York (sister of his brother Maxwell's wife Elizabeth). John built a limestone house in Kingston between 1824 and 1826 that served as the family home at the site of what is now 55 Barrack Street in Kingston. There is a historic plaque on the site. The Province of Upper Canada (french: link=no, province du Haut-Canada) was a part of British Canada established in 1791 by the Kingdom of Great Britain, to govern the central third of the lands in British North America, formerly part of the Province of Quebec since 1763. Upper Canada included all of modern-day Southern Ontario and all those areas of Northern Ontario in the which had formed part of New France, essentially the watersheds of the Ottawa River or Lakes Huron and Superior, excluding any lands within the watershed of Hudson Bay. Midland District was one of four districts of the Province of Quebec created in 1788 in the western reaches of the Montreal District and partitioned in 1791 to create the new colony of Upper Canada. Caledonia Springs, Ontario
Caledonia Springs is now an unincorporated community in the northwest of the municipality of The Nation, Prescott and Russell United Counties in eastern Ontario, Canada. It is part of the National Capital Region and is in the geographic county of Caledonia. County Road 20 forms a 90 degree angle heading north and east from the settlement. The nearest named communities are Alfred in the township of Alfred Plantagenet to the north west, and Vankleek Hill to the east. A tributary of the Ruisseau des Atocas flows through the community. Caledonia Springs was once the site of a large mineral springs spa and hotel. Opening in the 1830s, it slowly grew from a simple structure to a very large luxury health spa and resort before closing in 1915. Orlando Strange
Orlando Sampson Strange (June 13, 1826 – January 2, 1906) was a physician and politician in Ontario, Canada. He served as mayor of Kingston from 1859 to 1860. The son of John Strange, a native of Scotland, and Mary McGill, he was born in Kingston and was educated at Queen's College. He studied medicine with Doctor James Sampson and completed his medical studies at the University of New York. Strange then set up practice in Kingston. He also served as surgeon for the Kingston General Hospital. He was a member of Kingston city council from 1852 to 1854 and also served as chair of the school board. He was a member of the board of governors for the Kingston General Hospital. In 1849, Strange married Ann Emily Maclean. Kingston, Ontario
Kingston is a city in Ontario, Canada. It is located on the north-eastern end of Lake Ontario, at the beginning of the St. Lawrence River and at the mouth of the Cataraqui River (south end of the Rideau Canal).
