Col. John Stevens, III (June 26, 1749 – March 6, 1838) was an American lawyer, engineer, and inventor who constructed the first U.S. steam locomotive, first steam-powered ferry, and first U.S. commercial ferry service from his estate in Hoboken. He was influential in the creation of U.S. patent law. Early life Stevens was born June 26, 1749, in New York City, New York. He was the only son of John Stevens Jr. (1715–1792), a prominent state politician who served as a delegate to the Continental Congress, and Elizabeth Alexander (1726–1800). His sister, Mary Stevens (d. 1814), married Robert R. Livingston, the first Chancellor of the State of New York. John Harvey Stevens
Major General John Harvey Stevens was a career officer in the Royal Marines. His father John Stevens had been a commander in the Royal Navy. He was the youngest of three brothers (Thomas, Cornelius, John), all of whom were to serve as captains in the Royal Marines. His older brother Cornelius was killed in action during the Battle of Navarino. Biography Stevens served during the Napoleonic Wars in the Caribbean during 1806–7, participated in the Walcheren Campaign, and in the Iberian peninsula during 1810–11. John Valentine Stevens
John Valentine Stevens (13 March 1852 – 14 August 1925) was a British trade unionist and Lib-Lab politician. Born in Bristol, Stevens completed an apprenticeship as a tinplate worker before moving to Birmingham. In 1874, he joined the Amalgamated Tin Plate Workers of Birmingham, Wolverhampton and District, and was elected as its president in 1880, and then as Secretary in 1886. In this role, he persuaded the various local associations of tinplate workers to unite, forming the National Amalgamated Association of Tin-Plate Workers in 1894. John Shorter Stevens (May 30, 1933 – April 23, 2019) was an American politician and lawyer from North Carolina. Stevens was born in Asheville, North Carolina, on May 30, 1933. He attended Christ School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as its law school. Stevens moved north and resided in first the Rangitikei then Manawatu districts from 1854. He made a living in agricultural until 1873, when he was hired by Henry Russell as an assistant and interpreter during a Native Lands Alienation Commission at Napier. He pursued an occupation as a Maori interpreter and land agent, then began an auctioneering and land agency in 1875. John Stevens (July 21, 1783March 25, 1848) was an American farmer, educator, and politician from the U.S. state of New Hampshire. He served 15 years in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, representing Wilton and later Mason. Biography John Stevens was born at Wilton, New Hampshire, in July 1783. His parents were among the earliest settlers at Wilton. He was raised on his father's farm and educated in the common schools. At age 18, he became a school teacher. John Stevens Jr. (c. 1715 – May 10, 1792) was a prominent colonial American landowner, merchant, and politician. Early life Stevens was born in 1715 at Perth Amboy in the Province of New Jersey in what was then British America. He was the son of John Stevens Sr., who came to America in 1699 at the age of 17 as an indentured clerk, and his wife Ann Campbell. Career With his brother Richard, he owned mercantile vessels and commanded them on voyages to Madeira and the Caribbean between 1739 and 1743. He then settled in Perth Amboy, where he was a vestryman at St. Peter's Church from 1749 to 1752.
