John Stanhope, 1st Baron Stanhope
John Stanhope, 1st Baron Stanhope (1549? – 9 March 1621) was an English courtier, politician and peer. Life He was the third son of Sir Michael Stanhope, born in Yorkshire, but brought up in Nottinghamshire after his father's attainder for treason in 1552. His father's end did not apparently hinder his own career, and he is probably the John Stanhope who was Member of Parliament (MP) for Marlborough in the Parliament of 1572–1581, for Truro in 1586 and for Rochester in 1588. At court, Stanhope was a Gentleman of the Queen's Privy Chamber. On 22 December 1589 he wrote from Richmond Palace to Lord Talbot describing Queen Elizabeth's good health; "the Queen is so well as I assure you 6 or 7 galliards in a morning, besides music & singing, is her ordinary exercise." At some point during his early career, Stanhope attached himself to the coat-tails of Sir Robert Cecil, and subsequently proved a reliable ally, receiving in return a series of appointments. Sir John Stanhope
Sir John Stanhope (1559 – 1611) was an English knight and landowner, and father of Philip Stanhope, 1st Earl of Chesterfield. Career John Stanhope was the son of Sir Thomas Stanhope (d. 1596) of Shelford Priory, Shelford Manor, Nottinghamshire, and Margaret Port, the daughter of John Port (the younger), Sir John Port of Etwall, Derbyshire, and Elizabeth Giffard. Charles Cavendish (1553–1617), Charles Cavendish had a feud with the Stanhope family over issues including a fish weir in the River Trent. He arranged to fight a duel with John Stanhope at Lambeth choosing rapiers as the weapon. They came to Lambeth bridge by boat. It was discovered that Stanhope was wearing a sword-proof padded doublet. The fight was called off. In November 1599 Cavendish was shot in the backside by Stanhope's followers while visiting Kirkby Hardwick. John Stanhope (MP)
John Stanhope (5 January 1705 – 4 December 1748), of Blackheath, Kent was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1727 and 1748. Stanhope was the third son of Philip Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Chesterfield and Lady Elizabeth Savile, daughter of the Marquess of Halifax. Stanhope was brought in by the Duke of Newcastle as Member of Parliament (MP) for Nottingham on a compromise at the 1727 British general election. From 1728 to 1732, he was secretary to his brother, Philip Dormer, Lord Chesterfield, when he was ambassador at The Hague. In 1733 he followed Chesterfield into opposition and voted against the Excise Bill. He was not put up for Nottingham at the 1734 British general election but was returned on his family's interest at Derby at a by-election on 13 March 1736, in succession to his younger brother, Charles Stanhope. Lieutenant-Colonel John Stanhope Collings-Wells VC DSO (19 July 1880 – 27 March 1918) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was educated at Uppingham School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he joined the Apollo University Lodge. John Spencer Stanhope
John Spencer Stanhope (1787–1873) was an English landowner and antiquarian. Life The son of Walter Spencer-Stanhope, he was born 27 May 1787. He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in 1804. Around 1807 he was in Edinburgh, and joined the Speculative Society. Spencer Stanhope, after travel, spent the years 1810 to 1813 as a French prisoner of war of the French, taken captive by bad faith. He was detained for two years in Verdun, allowed to visit Paris, and then set free. He travelled with Thomas Allason in Greece. Based on researches carried out there, he published ''Topography illustrative of the Battle of Plataea'' in 1817. In 1816 he had added to the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum a piece of Parthenon frieze he had purchased in Greece. With an estate also at Horsforth, Spencer Stanhope resided at Cannon Hall, in Yorkshire. He died on 8 November 1873. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and Society of Antiquaries of London. John Roddam Spencer Stanhope
John Roddam Spencer Stanhope (20 January 1829 – 2 August 1908) was an English artist associated with Edward Burne-Jones and George Frederic Watts and often regarded as a second-wave pre-Raphaelite. His work is also studied within the context of Aestheticism and British Symbolism. As a painter, Stanhope worked in oil, watercolor, fresco, tempera, and mixed media. (Some of his oil paintings are mistaken for tempera.) His subject matter was mythological, allegorical, biblical, and contemporary. Stanhope was born in Yorkshire, England, and died in Florence, Italy. He was the uncle and teacher of the painter Evelyn De Morgan.
