John Simon (composer)
John Simon (born 12 March 1944) is a South African-born British classical music composer. Education and musical career The composer was born in Cape Town. He studied to be an economist at the University of Cape Town and left South Africa in 1965 as a result of apartheid and came to London where he studied composition part-time at Trinity College of Music and the Royal College of Music. His teachers included James Patten and John Lambert. He taught in the London Borough of Hillingdon for four years (1975–1979) where some of his earlier compositions received their premieres. In 1979 he returned to South Africa at the height of grand apartheid and taught music on the Cape Flats, while maintaining his creative work as composer. His opposition to apartheid led him to compose a series of orchestral works that were a response to the events of the time, including the death in custody of Steve Biko. John Lasarus Williams (29 October 1924 – 15 June 2004), known as John L, was a Welsh nationalist activist. Williams was born in Llangoed on Anglesey, but lived most of his life in nearby Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. In his youth, he was a keen footballer, and he also worked as a teacher. His activism started when he campaigned against the refusal of Brewer Spinks, an employer in Blaenau Ffestiniog, to permit his staff to speak Welsh. John Simons (chemist)
John Philip Simons (born 20 April 1934) is a British physical chemist known for his research in photochemistry and photophysics, molecular reaction dynamics and the spectroscopy of biological molecules. He was professor of physical chemistry at the University of Nottingham (1981–93) and Dr. Lee's Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oxford (1993–99). Education Simons studied at the University of Cambridge, graduating in 1955. His PhD is from Cambridge, under the supervision of Ronald George Wreyford Norrish. Career Simons first worked at the University of Birmingham, successively holding positions as an ICI Fellow (1960), lecturer (1961–67), reader (from 1975) and professor of photochemistry from 1979. In 1981 he became professor of physical chemistry at the University of Nottingham. In 1993 he was appointed Dr. Lee's Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oxford and fellow of Exeter College. John Simons (John Potts) is a British radio executive, former group programming director for GMG Radio now working as an International Radio Consultant, mainly in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Biography Simons began his career in 1979, before fronting the Breakfast Show on Radio Tees from 1983 to 1986 (where he was also head of music), and moving to BBC Radio Nottingham where he presented the mid-morning show and afternoon drive show from 1987 to 1994. In 1994 he was invited to be part of the team who launched Century Radio in Gateshead as programme director, assisting the managing director John Myers. Jonathan Simon is an American academic, the Lance Robbins Professor of Criminal Justice Law, and the former Associate Dean of the Jurisprudence and Social Policy Program at the UC Berkeley School of Law. John D. Simon (born February 11, 1957) was the 14th President of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He became Lehigh's president on July 1, 2015 and stepped down on June 30, 2021. Prior to his current position, Simon served as executive vice president and provost at the University of Virginia. Sir John Simon (10 October 1816 – 23 July 1904) was an English pathologist, surgeon and public health officer. He was the first Chief Medical Officer (United Kingdom), Chief Medical Officer for Her Majesty's Government from 1855–1876. Biography John Simon was born in London to Louis Michael Simon, a stockbroker, and Mathilde (née Nonnet). He was the sixth of Louis' fourteen children by two marriages. His medical career began in 1833 when he became an apprentice to surgeon Joseph Henry Green and he was educated at King's College London, King's College and St Thomas' Hospital in London. Jean Simon, anglicized as John Simon (also spelled Simons; c. 1675–1751) was an English mezzotint engraver and print publisher of French Huguenot birth, particularly known for his portraits. Notably associated with the German-born portrait painter Godfrey Kneller, Simon had an active career that spanned at least three and a half decades, and was regarded as one of the mezzotint medium's most prolific masters of his generation, along with the older contemporaneous engraver John Smith. John Ivan Simon (né Simmon; May 12, 1925 − November 24, 2019) was an American author and literary, theater, and film critic. After spending his early years in Belgrade, he moved to the United States, serving in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and studying at Harvard University. Beginning in the 1950s, he wrote arts criticism for a variety of publications, including a 36-year tenure as theatre critic for ''New York'' magazine, and latterly as a blogger.
