John Selwyn (1688–1751)
Colonel John Selwyn (20 August 1688 – 5 November 1751) of Matson, Gloucestershire,a British Army officer, courtier and politician, sat in the British House of Commons , House of Commons between 1715 and 1751. Selwyn was the eldest son of William Selwyn (British Army officer), Lieutenant-general William Selwyn, MP of Matson, Gloucestershire. He was commissioned into the Army in his infancy as ensign and lieutenant of the 3rd Foot Guards on 31 December 1688. His father died in 1702 whilst Governor of Jamaica and he inherited the Matson estate. He became captain and lieutenant-colonel in the 1st Foot Guards in 1707 and served in Flanders as aide-de-camp to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough , the Duke of Marlborough. By 1709, he married Mary Farrington, the daughter of Thomas Farrington (British Army officer), Lieutenant-general Thomas Farrington MP of Chislehurst. John Selwyn (bishop)
John Richardson Selwyn (20 May 1844 – 12 February 1898) was an Anglican priest who became the second Bishop of Melanesia and then the second Master of Selwyn College, Cambridge. Life Selwyn was born in Waimate North, New Zealand, the youngest son of George Augustus Selwyn and his wife Sarah Harriet, the only daughter of Sir John Richardson. His father was the first Bishop of New Zealand and then Bishop of Lichfield, in whose memory Selwyn College, Cambridge was named. Selwyn was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating in 1866. Like his father, Selwyn rowed for Cambridge and took part in the Boat Races of 1864 and 1866, both of which were won by Oxford. In 1864, with Robert Kinglake, he won the Silver Goblets at Henley Royal Regatta, beating Edwin Brickwood and his brother in the final.
