West Looe (UK Parliament Constituency)
West Looe, often spelt Westlow or alternative Westlowe, in Cornwall, England, was a rotten borough represented in the House of Commons of England from 1535 to 1707, in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800, and in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1832. It elected two Members of Parliament (MP) by the bloc vote system of election. It was disfranchised in the Reform Act 1832. History West Looe was one of a number of Cornish boroughs enfranchised in the Tudor period, and like almost all of them it was a rotten borough from the start, with the size and importance of the community that comprised it quite inadequate to justify its representation. The borough consisted of the town of West Looe in Cornwall, connected by bridge across the River Looe to East Looe, which was also a parliamentary borough. John Sargent (1750–1831)
John Sargent (1749 – 9 September 1831) was a British Member of Parliament and administrator. He was born a younger son of John Sargent, MP of Halstead Place, Kent and educated at Eton College (1760–67) and St. John’s College, Cambridge (1767) before studying law at Lincoln's Inn from 1770. He held a wide variety of offices: Director of the Bank of England (1778–79), Gentleman of the Privy Chamber (1784), member of the Board of Agriculture (1803), Clerk of the Ordnance (1793–1802), joint Secretary to the Treasury (1802–1804) and a Commissioner of Audit (1806–21). John Sargent (April 6, 1792 – August 7, 1874) was a farmer, merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Barrington township in the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia from 1736 to 1740 as a Conservative. John Sargent (June 21, 1799 – December 5, 1880) was a Massachusetts politician who served in both branches of the Massachusetts legislature, as a member and President of the Cambridge Common Council, and as the Mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts. John Sargent (24 December 1750 – 24 January 1824) was an American Loyalist during American Revolution who was exiled to Canada where he became a politician. Early life Sargent was born in Salem, Massachusetts on 24 December 1750. He was the second son of Colonel Epes Sargent, by his second wife, the widow Catharine Browne. He was a younger brother to Paul Dudley Sargent, a distinguished Revolutionary War soldier, and the younger half-brother to Winthrop Sargent (1727–1793) and Daniel Sargent Sr. (1730–1806), a prominent merchant. His maternal grandparents were Ann Dudley, daughter of Joseph Dudley, and John Winthrop (1681–1747), son of Wait Winthrop, grandson of John Winthrop the Younger and great-grandson of John Winthrop, Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. John Sargent (1780–1833) was an English clergyman, academic and biographer. Wealthy by background but a country pastor, he was a prominent Evangelical who came to be regarded by others on his wing of the Church of England as an exemplary cleric. He was also centrally connected, by ties to other major Evangelicals of the time.
