John S. Whalen
John Sibley Whalen (June 30, 1868 – May 3, 1913) was Secretary of State of New York from 1907 to 1908. Biography Whalen was a son of Richard Whalen of Rochester, one of the oldest tobacconists in the United States. He graduated from St. Patrick's Parochial School, Rochester High School, and Rochester Business Institute. He then engaged in the cigar and tobacco business in Norwich and Oneonta, New York, later returning to Rochester to work for his father's company. He was a member of the Tobacco Workers' Union and President of the Rochester Trade and Labor Council. His high standing in labor circles resulted in his selection by Governor John Alden Dix as First Deputy State Labor Commissioner, and he was nominated for New York Secretary of State by the Independence League, and endorsed by the Democratic Party, and elected in November 1906. Oneonta ( ) is a city in southern Otsego County, New York, United States. It is one of the northernmost cities of the Appalachian Region. John Alden Dix
John Alden Dix (December 25, 1860 – April 9, 1928) was an American businessman and politician who served as 38th Governor of New York from January 1911 to January 1913. A native of Glens Falls, New York, Dix attended Cornell University before becoming active in several Dix family business ventures. He later expanded into the lumber and paper industries, where his success made him wealthy. Dix became active in politics as a Democratic Party, and served terms as chairman of the Washington County Democratic Committee and the New York State Democratic Committee. In 1908, Dix was an unsuccessful candidate for Lieutenant Governor of New York. In 1910, Dix was the successful Democratic nominee for governor, and he served one two-year term, January 1911 to December 1912. Independence League
The Independence Party, established as the Independence League, was a short-lived minor American political party sponsored by newspaper publisher and politician William Randolph Hearst in 1906. The organization was the successor to the Municipal Ownership League, under whose colors Hearst had run for Mayor of New York in 1905. Following its second-place finish in a race for Governor of Massachusetts in 1907, the party set its sights on the Presidency, and held a national convention to nominate a ticket in 1908. The party garnered only 83,000 votes nationally in the 1908 election, however, and immediately dissolved as a national force.
