John S. Trower
John Sheppard Trower (1849–1911) was an American businessman, restauranteur, and founder of a school. He co-founded Downingtown Industrial and Agricultural School, in operation from 1905 until 1993. Trower was among the wealthiest African Americans in Pennsylvania and possibly the United States at the time of his death. Early life and career Trower was born on October 3, 1849, in Eastville, Northampton County, Virginia. His parents, Luke and Anna M. Trower, were free black farmers and of mixed white, Native American and African American descent. From age 16 to 21, Trower worked on the farm with his family, saving all that he could. All through his early life young Trower was hobbled with the necessity of servicing his family's debt. By the time he was 21 he had saved enough to lift this burden from his family and he felt free to go in search of a fortune. He presented his mother with the deed of the farm and bade her goodbye. Eastville is a town in Northampton County, Virginia, United States. The population was 203 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Northampton County. The Northampton County Courthouse Historic District is part of the Eastville Historic District at the county seat. Geography Eastville is located at (37.350961, −75.940056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.6 km2), all of it land. USS ''Vesuvius'', the third ship of the United States Navy named for Mount Vesuvius, the Italian volcano, was a unique vessel in the Navy inventory which marked a departure from more conventional forms of main battery armament. John Wanamaker
John Wanamaker (July 11, 1838December 12, 1922) was an American merchant and religious, civic and political figure, considered by some to be a proponent of advertising and a "pioneer in marketing". He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and served as U.S. Postmaster General during the term of U.S. President Benjamin Harrison from 1889 to 1893. Early life and family Wanamaker was born on July 11, 1838, in a then-rural, unincorporated area that would in time come to be known as the Grays Ferry neighborhood of South Philadelphia. His parents were John Nelson Wanamaker, a brickmaker and native of Kingwood, New Jersey, and Elizabeth Deshong Kochersperger, daughter of a farmer and innkeeper at Gray's Ferry. ''Retvizan'' (russian: Ретвизан) was a pre-dreadnought battleship built before the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905 for the Imperial Russian Navy.
