John Ross (Nova Scotia Politician)
John Ross (December 27, 1820 – 1892) was a political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Victoria County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1867 to 1874 as a Liberal member. He was preceded in the Assembly by his brother, William Ross, who represented Victoria County from 1857 to 1867. At Confederation in 1867 his brother William Ross was elected to represent Victoria County in the House of Commons at Ottawa. John Ross was born at Churchville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, the son of John Ross. In 1863, he married Christina Isabell McKay. He lived at Little Bras d'Or in Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia. Victoria County is an historical county and census division of Nova Scotia, Canada. Local government is provided by the Municipality of the County of Victoria and the Wagmatcook 1 reserve. History Named after Queen Victoria, it was established by statute in 1851. Cape Breton County was divided into two separate counties in that year, with the northern portion becoming Victoria County. Like other parts of Nova Scotia, the county was sparsely inhabited by the Miꞌkmaq, who hunted in the area. The earliest settlers of Victoria County were almost exclusively Loyalists, with most arriving from the United States in the years following the American Revolutionary War. It was noted by historian G.G. The Nova Scotia Liberal Party is a centrist provincial political party in Nova Scotia, Canada and the provincial section of the Liberal Party of Canada. William Ross (Canadian Politician)
William Ross (December 20, 1824 – March 17, 1912) was a Canadian politician. Born on Boularderie Island, Nova Scotia, the son of John Ross, a Scottish immigrant, and Robina McKenzie, Ross was a merchant and shipbuilder. In 1855, he married Eliza Moore. He represented Victoria County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1857 to 1867. He was elected to the 1st Canadian Parliament in 1867. From 1873 to 1874, he was the Minister of Militia and Defence. Pictou County is a county in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It was established in 1835, and was formerly a part of Halifax County from 1759 to 1835. It had a population of 43,657 people in 2021, a decline of 0.2 percent from 2016. Furthermore, its 2016 population is only 88.11% of the census population in 1991. It is the sixth most populous county in Nova Scotia. Etymology The origin of the name "Pictou" is obscure. Possible Mi'kmaq derivations include "Piktook" meaning an explosion of gas, and "Bucto" meaning fire, possibly related to the coal fields in the area.
