John Roslyn Garnet
John Roslyn (Ros) Garnet (1906–1998) was an Australian biochemist and naturalist with a strong interest in nature conservation. Life Garnet began his career in the Commonwealth Health Department Laboratory at Port Pirie, where he worked from 1928 to 1930. However, for most of his career (1930 – 1971) he was based at the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories in Parkville, Melbourne. Garnet was active in the conservation movement and was a founder of the Victorian National Parks Association in 1952, as well as serving as its Honorary Secretary for 21 years. He had a particular interest in Wilsons Promontory National Park. Wilsons Promontory National Park
The Wilsons Promontory National Park, commonly known as Wilsons Prom or The Prom, is a national park in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia, located approximately southeast of Melbourne. The national park is the southernmost national park on mainland Australia, known for its rainforests, beaches and abundant wildlife. The national park covers the southern portion of Wilsons Promontory, a peninsula containing South Point, the southernmost point on the Australian mainland. A lighthouse on the south-east corner of the peninsula is the southernmost lighthouse on mainland Australia and has operated continuously since 1859. Elizabeth Vivienne Conabere
Elizabeth Vivienne Conabere (3 June 1929 – 29 October 2009) was an Australian botanical artist, writer and conservationist. Conabere provided paintings and illustrations of plants for publications and series of stamps, and exhibited her works in galleries across her home state of Victoria, Australia. Among her works are ''Wildflowers of South-eastern Australia'' (1974) and ''An Australian Countrywoman's Diary'' (1986). Conabere was also active in conservation institutions. Early life Conabere was born in Alexandra, Victoria to Phyllis Balding, an English nurse and Percy Balding, a pharmacist. She grew up in Mansfield, Victoria. Conabere took art training and fashion design in Melbourne. In the early 1950s, she was married to Roly Conabere; they had one son. The marriage ended in the 1960s. The Order of Australia is an honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of the Australian Government. Before the establishment of the order, Australian citizens received British honours. Australian Natural History Medallion
The Australian Natural History Medallion is awarded each year by the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria (FNCV) to the person judged to have made the most meritorious contribution to the understanding of Australian Natural History. The idea originated with J. K. Moir, a book collector and member of the Bread and Cheese Club. Moir wrote to the FNCV in 1939 suggesting that such a medallion should be awarded to a person who had performed, in his words, ‘a signal service’ to the protection of flora and fauna—‘a variation of the Nobel awards’. Nominations for the Medallion are made by field naturalist clubs and kindred bodies from all over Australia, each nomination being valid for a three-year period. The Medallion has usually been awarded annually since 1940.
