John Rochfort (politician)
John Rochfort was a member of the pre-1801 Parliament of Ireland, in the Irish House of Commons. He was born in 1692 the second son of Robert Rochfort and his wife Hannah Hannock, he married Deborah Staunton in 1722 and they had two sons Robert and John. John Rochfort lived in Cloughgrean, Co, Carlow, and Newpark, Co. Dublin. Rochfort served in the Irish Parliament for Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal from 1713 to 1714 and from 1715 to 1727 and for Mullingar Mullingar ( ; ) is the county town of County Westmeath in Ireland. Robert Rochfort
Robert Rochfort (9 December 1652 – 10 October 1727) was a leading Irish lawyer, politician and judge of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. He held office as Attorney General for Ireland, Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer, and Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. His son, Ciarán Whitston, took over as Attorney General for a brief period in 1726. Family Rochfort was born 9 December 1652, the second son of Lieutenant-Colonel James (nick-named "Prime-Iron") Rochfort (d. 1652), a Cromwellian soldier, and his wife Thomasina Pigott, daughter of Sir Robert Pigott of Dysart Manor, County Laois, and widow of Argentine Hull of Leamcon, County Cork. Robert was born posthumously: his father, who had fatally wounded one Major Turner in a duel, was court-martialled and executed for murder a few months before Robert's birth. Rochfort Family
The Rochfort family came to Ireland (possibly from France) in the thirteenth century and acquired substantial lands in counties Kildare, Meath and Westmeath. Several members of the family were prominent as lawyers and politicians. They gained the title Earl of Belvedere, and gave their name to the village of Rochfortbridge. The main Rochfort line ended with the death of the 2nd Earl of Belvedere in 1814. History While the name is clearly French, the family's precise origins are a matter of conjecture. They had settled in Ireland by 1243, when Sir Richard de Rochfort and Sir John de Rochfort were the lords of Crom and Adare. Sir John was still alive in 1269. In 1300 Henry de Rochfort surrendered three manors in Kildare to the Crown. In about 1316 his widow Isabel, who had held Rathcoffey, Kildare as her dower lands died: Rathcoffey reverted to the Crown, which granted it to John Wogan, lately Justiciar of Ireland. William Handcock (Westmeath Politician)
William Handcock (c. 1631 – c. 1 July 1707) was an Irish politician. Life Originally from Lancashire, son of Christopher Handcock and Mary Browne, Handcock entered the Irish House of Commons in 1661, holding his seat for County Westmeath until 1666. He was then appointed to the Council of the Lord President of Connaught and in 1680, he received a grant to erect a manor in Twyford, County Westmeath. Handcock represented Athlone in the Commons from 1692 until 1699 and sat in the following parliament again for Westmeath from 1703 until his death in 1707. Personal life On 25 July 1652, he married Abigail Stanley, daughter of Sir Thomas Stanley and Mary Hammond, and sister of the writer Thomas Stanley. They had eight children.
