John Robb (1862–1913)
John Robb was born in Alloa on 25 April 1862, the first son of Andrew Robb (1825-1900), the foreman and later Manager of Gaberston Mill, and his wife Mary Bennie Swanson, daughter of John Swanson, a Distillery Manager. He had three brothers and a sister, Janet, the mother of classical composer Edward Norman Hay (1889-1943). Training John trained as an architect in Alloa, likely with John Melvin & Son, before moving to Newcastle upon Tyne in 1882 where he was assistant to Joseph J Lish, an architect who specialized in ecclesiastical work and concrete construction. He later returned to Scotland and worked as an architect for a spell before joining the Assessor of Railways and Canals in Edinburgh. John Robb (author)
John Robb is an American author, military analyst, and entrepreneur. Career Military Robb graduated from the United States Air Force Academy Honors Program with a Bachelor of Science in astronautical engineering in 1985 and completed USAF Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) in 1986. During his military career, Robb worked in the area of counterterrorism with the United States Special Operations Command, participating in global operations as a mission commander, pilot and mission planner in El Salvador, Panama, Colombia, Turkey, and Egypt, among others. He resigned his Air Force commission with the rank of captain in August 1992. After leaving the Air Force, Robb attended Yale University. John Robb (civil Engineer)
John Robb (4 September 1834 – 18 May 1896) was an Irish immigrant to Australia who was responsible for several important civil engineering works. History Robb was born in Lislaird near Castlederg, County Tyrone, Ireland, to Arthur Robb and his wife Sarah Robb, née Bird. In 1854 Robb and two brothers Robert (aged 18) and Samuel (aged 15) left for Australia aboard ''Fitzjames'', arriving at Melbourne in October 1854. He joined the rush to the goldfields, teamed up with fellow ''Fitzjames'' passenger Thomas Stranger carting stone, then formed a partnership Overend & Robb with Best Overend (c. 1833 – 30 November 1877) as contractors. Thomas Stranger, whose sister Elizabeth he later married, was with them from the outset and served as their supervising engineer to at least 1888. Robb writes for and runs the ''Louder Than War'' website and a monthly music magazine of the same name. He has written several books on music and occasionally makes media appearances as a music commentator. He is also the vocalist in the punk rock band Goldblade and bassist and vocalist in post punk band The Membranes. John Donald Robb (June 12, 1892 – January 6, 1989) was an American composer, ethnomusicologist, arts administrator, and attorney. Biography Early life A symphony concert in his hometown of Minneapolis when he was a pre-teen planted the seed for Robb's lifelong desire to be a composer. He began studying cello, and then pipe organ. While pursuing an undergraduate degree in English literature at Yale University, Robb continued his music education, including a course taught by Horatio Parker. Despite his passion for music, Robb turned to a career in the law. He attended both the University of Minnesota Law School and Harvard Law School. John Robb (surgeon)
John David Alexander Robb (24 February 1932 – 13 February 2018) was a surgeon from Ballymoney in County Antrim, Northern Ireland who served for seven years a member of Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Oireachtas (the legislature of the Republic of Ireland). Career A liberal Protestant in the all-Ireland tradition, Robb was educated at Rockport School, Holywood, County Down, and at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh. He then trained in medicine at Queen's University, Belfast and later specialised in surgery. Later, he became a member of the Wolfe Tone Society in the 1960s, and in the early 1980s he founded the New Ireland Group, which sought to promote a new vision of Ireland which would radically differ both from the Unionist viewpoint and from the Catholic and Gaelic vision which was then perceived to be on offer as an alternative to Unionism.
