John Reed King
John Reed King (October 25, 1914 – July 8, 1979) was an American radio and television game show host who hosted numerous game shows during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Career King was one of the announcers for ''The American School of the Air'' on CBS,Dunning, John. (1998). ''On the Air: The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio''. Oxford University Press. and he had one of the top-rated radio shows of the 1930s in New York City with ''Missus Goes A-Shopping''. He was also an announcer for the radio version of ''Death Valley Days'' and for '' The Jack Berch Show''. On August 1, 1944, he hosted the live television version of ''Missus Goes A-Shopping'', and on January 29, 1946, he hosted the television version of ''It's a Gift'', making these among the first television quiz shows ever aired, after ''CBS Television Quiz'' (1941-1942). What's My Name? (radio Program)
''What's My Name?'' was a 30-minute radio program in the United States. The program was hosted by Arlene Francis and was among the first radio shows to offer cash prizes to contestants. Format Contestants on ''What's My Name?'' had to identify a person from a maximum of 10 clues given by the show's two hosts. People to be identified were celebrities and historical characters. In the show's early days, a correct guess on the first clue earned the contestant $10; the amount earned dropped by $1 with each additional clue. In 1948, the top prize was increased to $100, with $50 and $25 prizes, respectively, for identification on the second and third clues. The program also involved listener participation to some extent, as listeners could send in questions to be used on the air. People who submitted questions received $10 for each question used. Gunsmoke
''Gunsmoke'' is an American radio and television Western drama series created by director Norman Macdonnell and writer John Meston. It centers on Dodge City, Kansas, in the 1870s, during the settlement of the American West. The central character is lawman Marshal Matt Dillon, played by William Conrad on radio and James Arness on television. When aired in the United Kingdom, the television series was initially titled ''Gun Law'', later reverting to ''Gunsmoke''. The radio series ran from 1952 to 1961. The show aired Saturdays from February 14, 1953, to late April on ABC, and Sundays from May 3, 1953, to June 28, 1953, on DuMont. The show was an auction where audience members bid on items, with all revenues from the auction directed to a specific charity that week, and often matching funds provided to that charity or another organization on behalf of the show's sponsor, Charles Antell Cosmetics. The show was a creation of Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Productions. ''Chance of a Lifetime'' is an American television competitive talent show that began on ABC on September 6, 1950, and aired on ABC and DuMont between 1952 and 1956. Format Three professional performers, usually singers, dancers or instrumentalists, competed. In the early version of the show, there were four contestants with the winner chosen by votes tallied by attendants in the audience.
