John Reed (animator)
John F. Reed (August 24, 1908 – September 29, 1992) was an American animator. In the 1940s, Reed worked on major Disney productions such as '' Pinocchio'', '' The Reluctant Dragon'', and '' Bambi''. As an assistant effects animator on ''Fantasia'', he was responsible for making fine corrections to the motion of background elements such as fish and seaweed. He was a protegee of artist Hanson Puthuff. His most notable credit was as animation director for the 1954 film ''Animal Farm''. As one colleague described, "Reed's influence on the animation in ''Animal Farm'' was tremendous. He knew exactly the effect he wanted and how to get it." ''A Knight for a Day'' is a 1946 Disney short film starring Goofy, which is loosely based on the novel ''A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court''. Directed by Jack Hannah, this 7-minute animated comedy short was scripted by Bill Peet. It follows Donald and Goofy after finding themselves stranded at sea and the crazy ways they try to survive. Plot Goofy and Donald buy a coin-operated sailboat, which leaves Donald constantly depositing nickels into the slot to keep the sail functioning. Donald loses his temper and breaks the mechanism, stranding him and Goofy in the open ocean. After several days, they try to catch some fish to eat, but are beaten by a seagull. The last Donald Duck cartoon to feature Pluto, it centers on Donald using hypnosis goggles to turn Pluto into various animal-like states. Plot Donald receives a package in the mail containing a hypnosis kit with a pair of goggles. Under instructions that he should select a subject of low intelligence, he decides to test the goggles on Pluto. He hypnotizes Pluto to think he's a variety of animals—a mouse, a turtle, a chicken—and each time Pluto starts behaving like the animal, even partially taking on its form. Plot The short opens on a map, with footprints belonging to Donald trailing across the border of North America to South America, making a trail through the Andes. Donald is seen climbing up a vertical side of the mountain with plungers on his feet, yodeling as he goes. He sees the nest, and quickly reaches the top, ready to take an egg from a condor. One condor hatchling has already hatched and starts squawking at Donald’s arrival, but Donald just tells the hatchling to shut up and shoves him back into his egg shell.
