John Red Eagle
John Denyer Red Eagle (September 21, 1948 โ January 12, 2024) was an American Osage politician who served as the principal chief of the Osage Nation between June 2010 and his removal from office in January 2014. He also served as the assistant principal chief from 2006 to 2010. Biography John Denyer Red Eagle was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on September 21, 1948, to Edward Red Eagle and Virginia Logan. His family, members of the Eagle Clan, included two former Osage Nation Chiefs, his father and grandfather Paul Red Eagle. John D. Red Eagle grew up in Osage County, Oklahoma and was raised in the Native American church. Both of his parents were " full blood" Osage and members of the Osage Nation. He graduated from Pawhuska High School in 1967 and then attended Oklahoma State University before graduating from Colorado Community College. Osage Nation
The Osage Nation ( ) ( Osage: ๐๐ป ๐๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐ผ๐ฐอ ('), "People of the Middle Waters") is a Midwestern Native American tribe of the Great Plains. The tribe developed in the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys around 700 BC along with other groups of its language family. They migrated west after the 17th century, settling near the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, as a result of Iroquois invading the Ohio Valley in a search for new hunting grounds. The term "Osage" is a French version of the tribe's name, which can be roughly translated as "calm water". The Osage people refer to themselves in their indigenous Dhegihan Siouan language as ๐๐ฐ๐๐ฐ๐๐ท ('), or "Mid-waters". By the early 19th century, the Osage had become the dominant power in the region, feared by neighboring tribes.
