John Randoll Mackenzie
Major-General John Randoll Mackenzie of Suddie (c. 1763 – 28 July 1809) was a senior British Army officer who saw action in the Napoleonic Wars. Early life MacKenzie was the son of William Mackenzie of Suddie and Margaret Mackenzie (daughter of Sir Alexander Mackenzie, 5th Baronet). Military career Mackenzie was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marines in 1778. After serving in India, he secured a commission as a captain in the 78th Regiment of Foot when it was raised in 1793 and was deployed to the Dutch Cape Colony in 1795. He was elected as member of parliament for Tain Burghs in 1806 and then transferred to Sutherland in 1808. Deployed to Spain for service in the Peninsular War, he commanded a brigade in the 3rd Division and also became the first General Officer Commanding 3rd Division when it was formed on 18 June 1809. Peninsular War
The Peninsular War (1807–1814) was the military conflict fought in the Iberian Peninsula by Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom against the invading and occupying forces of the First French Empire during the Napoleonic Wars. In Spain, it is considered to overlap with the Spanish War of Independence. The war started when the French and Spanish armies invaded and occupied Portugal in 1807 by transiting through Spain, and it escalated in 1808 after Napoleonic France occupied Spain, which had been its ally. William Dundas
William Dundas (1762–1845) was a Scottish politician. The son of Robert Dundas, of Arniston, the younger, he became a barrister at Lincoln's Inn in 1788. He was member of parliament (MP) for the Anstruther Burghs from 1794 to 1796, for the Northern Burghs from 1796 to 1802, for Sutherland in 1802 and 1806, for Cullen in 1810 and Edinburgh from 1812 to 1831. He appointed a Privy Counsellor in 1800 and was Secretary at War from 1804 to 1806. He was a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty in 1812. He was appointed Keeper of the Signet in 1814 and Lord Clerk Register in 1821. William Fremantle (politician)
Sir William Henry Fremantle, (28 December 176619 October 1850) was a British courtier and politician. He served as Treasurer of the Household from 1826 to 1837. Background Fremantle was the son of John Fremantle, of Aston Abbots, Buckinghamshire, by his wife Frances Edwards, daughter of John Edwards, of Bristol. He was the brother of Sir Thomas Fremantle and the uncle of Thomas Fremantle, 1st Baron Cottesloe, and Sir Charles Fremantle. Political career Fremantle began his parliamentary career by being elected Member of Parliament for the Irish borough of Enniskillen at a by-election on 31 July 1806. Sir James Macdonald, 2nd Baronet, GCMG (14 February 1784 – 29 June 1832) was a British politician. He sat in the House of Commons between 1805 and 1832. Macdonald was born 14 February 1784, the eldest and only surviving son of Sir Archibald Macdonald, a Baron of the Exchequer, by Lady Louisa, the eldest daughter of Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford. With the support of his uncle, George Leveson-Gower, 2nd Marquess of Sutherland (later first duke), Macdonald was first elected to parliament at the by-election for the Tain Burghs in 1805. He then successfully contested the seats of Newcastle-under-Lyme at the general election of 1806, Sutherland at the general election of 1812, the Calne by-election of 1816 (and subsequent elections) and Hampshire at the general election of 1831. The 1806 United Kingdom general election was the election of members to the 3rd Parliament of the United Kingdom. This was the second general election to be held after the Acts of Union 1800, Union of Great Britain and Ireland. The general election took place in a situation of considerable uncertainty about the future of British politics, following the sudden death of William Pitt the Younger and the formation of the Ministry of all the Talents. Battle Of Talavera
The Battle of Talavera (27–28 July 1809) was fought just outside the town of Talavera de la Reina, Spain some southwest of Madrid, during the Peninsular War. At Talavera, a British army under Sir Arthur Wellesley combined with a Spanish army under General Cuesta in operations against French-occupied Madrid. The French army withdrew at night after several of its attacks had been repulsed. After Marshal Soult's French army had retreated from Portugal, General Wellesley's 20,000 British troops advanced into Spain to join 33,000 Spanish troops under General Cuesta. They marched up the Tagus valley to Talavera, some southwest of Madrid.
