John R. Smith (born December 29, 1945) is a politician from Leesville, Louisiana, who is a Republican former member of the Louisiana State Senate for District 30. In 2010, Smith switched from Democratic to Republican party affiliation. Background Smith received both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees from the Roman Catholic Loyola University in New Orleans. Smith is also a former member of the Vernon Parish Police Jury and was the jury president from 1980 to 1983. Those same years, he also served on the Louisiana Democratic State Central Committee. Smith and his wife, the former Pamela Arnondin, have a son and a daughter, Bradford Smith and Payton Smith John, the wife of former United States Representative Chris John of Louisiana's 7th congressional district, since disbanded. The Louisiana State Senate (french: Sénat de Louisiane) is the upper house of the state legislature of Louisiana. All senators serve four-year terms and are assigned to multiple committees. Composition The Louisiana State Senate is composed of 39 senators elected from single-member districts from across the state of Louisiana by the electors thereof. Senators must be a qualified elector (registered voter), be at least eighteen years of age, be domiciled in their district for at least one year, and must have been a resident of the state for at least two years. Christopher Charles John (born January 5, 1960) is an American politician and lobbyist who from 1997 to 2005 served as a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives for Louisiana's 7th congressional district, since disbanded and merged into the 3rd district. Early life Chris John was born in Crowley in Acadia Parish, one of six children, and reared as a Roman Catholic. He is of Lebanese, French, and German extraction. Anthony Claude Leach Jr., known as Buddy Leach (March 30, 1934 – August 6, 2022), was an American businessman, lawyer, military veteran, and Democratic politician from Louisiana. From 1979 to 1981, he served one term as a U.S. representative for Louisiana's 4th congressional district. He also served as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives and as chairman of the Louisiana Democratic Party. In 2003, Leach was an unsuccessful candidate for governor of Louisiana in an election won by Kathleen Blanco. Early life, education, and career Leach was born in Leesville in Vernon Parish in western Louisiana. He graduated from Leesville High School in 1951.
