John R. McLean (Canadian Politician)
John Robert McLean (January 1, 1906 – October 9, 1964) was a merchant and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 1st Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1940 to 1943, from 1947 to 1951 and from 1959 to 1964 as a Progressive Conservative. He was born in Souris, Prince Edward Island, the son of Harry Daniel McLean and Annie Mitchell, and the grandson of John McLean. He was educated at the Pictou Academy. In 1936, he married Marjorie Robina McBeath. He worked at a bank for several years before becoming president of the family business. McLean was defeated by Herbert Acorn when he ran for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1939; he was elected to the provincial assembly in a 1940 by-election held following Acorn's death. He was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1943, 1951 and 1955. Prince Edward Island (PEI; ) is one of the thirteen Provinces and territories of Canada, provinces and territories of Canada. It is the smallest province in terms of land area and population, but the most densely populated. The Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island (french: Assemblée législative de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard) is the sole chamber of the General Assembly of Prince Edward Island. The Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island is one of three major political parties on Prince Edward Island. The party and its rival, the Liberals, have alternated in power since responsible government was granted in 1851. Souris, Prince Edward Island
Souris is a town in Kings County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. It is located near the northeastern tip of the province. History Souris was founded by Acadians in 1727 as a fishing settlement at the mouth of the Souris River. These early settlers experienced several plagues of field mice in the surrounding area during the 1720s-1760s which damaged crops. Souris is French for "mouse" and a mouse is the Town's Mascot. It is said that "a French vessel passing by the bay in the early 1700s was forced to cut through the waves of drowned mice and so gave the name to the area. The 1744 map of Sieur de la Roque names the bay, Havre a la Souris”. Earlier names also included: Colville Bay, Grand Haven, New Bristol, and Red Cliffs. The name likely also shares similar roots with the Souriquois and the Souris River. John McLean (Canadian Politician)
John McLean (September 24, 1846 – February 20, 1936) was a merchant and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He represented King's County in the House of Commons of Canada from 1891 to 1896 as a Conservative member. McLean represented Souris division in the Senate of Canada from 1915 until his death. He was born in Mount Herbert, the son of Daniel McLean, and was educated at Prince of Wales College. In 1852, he married Matilda Jane Jury. McLean represented 1st Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1882 to 1891, from 1900 to 1904 and from 1908 to 1915. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the riding of King's in the House of Commons in 1904. He served in the provincial Executive Council as a Minister without Portfolio from 1911 to 1915. He died in Souris at the age of 89. Pictou Academy
Pictou Academy (PA), founded in 1815 by Dr. Thomas McCulloch, is a secondary school in Pictou, Nova Scotia. Prior to the twentieth century, it was a grammar school; a liberal, nonsectarian degree-granting college; and then a secondary school. Pictou Academy's current principal is Starr Pettipas. The Pictou Academy Educational Foundation provides additional funds to the school. The original site of the academy was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1937, as it symbolized the introduction of nonsectarian education to The Maritimes in the early 19th century. In 2017 the CCRSB elected a board of supervisors to survey the three schools in the town of Pictou. Herbert Acorn
Herbert Hunt Acorn (August 1868 – December 6, 1939) was a merchant and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 1st Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1935 to 1939 as a Liberal. He was born in Lower Montague, Prince Edward Island, the son of Charles Acorn and Caroline Sabine, and was educated there and at the Charlottetown Business School. Acorn worked for Daniel Gordon, then for the firm of Westaway and McDonald and then for Prowse Brothers Ltd, owned by Lemuel Prowse. In 1894, he married Harriet Ann Sellar. He opened a general store in Souris in 1896. After fire destroyed his store, he opened a lumber mill. Acorn was mayor of Souris from 1920 to 1921. He also served as president of the Souris Board of Trade. Prince Edward Island Hospital
The Prince Edward Island Hospital is a former acute care hospital that was located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. It was the first public general hospital established in the province and the largest such facility throughout its history. The facility was established by the provincial government on January 28, 1884 on a property known as "Haszard House" located at present-day 24-36 Longworth Avenue in the northeast part of the city. The Prince Edward Island Hospital was predated by the Charlottetown Hospital, which was established in 1879 by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlottetown. The city's residents demanded that the government open "a general" hospital that was not affiliated with a religious body. Charlottetown
Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. Named after Queen Charlotte, Charlottetown was an unincorporated town until it was incorporated as a city in 1855. It was the site of the famous Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the first gathering of Canadian and Maritime statesmen to discuss the proposed Maritime Union. This conference led, instead, to the union of British North American colonies in 1867, which was the beginning of the Canadian confederation. PEI, however, did not join Confederation until 1873.
