John R. Drexel III
John Rozet Drexel III (October 6, 1919 – April 13, 2007) was an American sportsman and clubman. Early life Drexel was born in Manhattan on October 6, 1919. He was the only child of John Rozet Drexel Jr. (1890–1936), and, his first wife, Elizabeth Hough ( Thompson) Drexel (1896–1943), who married in 1918 and divorced in 1924. Shortly after his parents' divorce, his father married Jane Barbour, a daughter of John Robert Taliaferro Barbour and a descendant of President Zachary Taylor, in 1925. From his father's second marriage, he had two half-siblings, David Anthony Drexel (who married Joan Gripenberg, a daughter of G. A. Gripenberg, the Finnish Minister to London, Sweden, and the United Nations), and Jane Barbour Drexel (who married Harry Marshall Vale Jr., and John Porteous II). The Knickerbocker Club (known informally as The Knick) is a gentlemen's club in New York City that was founded in 1871. It is considered to be the most exclusive club in the United States and one of the most aristocratic gentlemen's clubs in the world. Stonor Park is a historic country house and private deer park situated in a valley in the Chiltern Hills at Stonor, about north of Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, England, close to the county boundary with Buckinghamshire. Ralph Francis Julian Stonor, 5th Baron Camoys (26 January 1884 – 3 August 1968) was an English Aristocrat and Lord of Stonor Park who married an American heiress. Early life Lord Camoys was born on the 26 January 1884 at Stonor Park in Stonor, north of Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, England. He was the son of Francis Robert Stonor, 4th Baron Camoys (1856–1897) and the former Jessie Philippa Carew. His father was the Lord-in-Waiting to Queen Victoria in 1886 and again from 1892 to 1895. William Watts Sherman (August 4, 1842 – January 22, 1912) was a New York City businessman and the treasurer of the Newport Casino. In 1875–1876 he had the William Watts Sherman House constructed in Newport, Rhode Island. The Everglades Club is a social club in Palm Beach, Florida. When its construction began in July 1918, it was to be called the ''Touchstone Convalescent Club'', and it was intended to be a hospital for the wounded of World War I. But the war ended a few months later, and it changed into a private club. The Club has no sign, website, or Wi-Fi. Cell phones are prohibited. History Paris Singer and his good friend, the architect Addison Mizner, were visiting Palm Beach in the spring of 1918. Singer decided to build a hospital with Mizner as the architect. The Clambake Club of Newport is a historic private club at 353 Tuckerman Avenue in Middletown, Rhode Island. Building The club's main building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. It is located at the tip of Easton's Point, dividing Easton Bay and Sachuest Bay on the southern coast of Middletown, with fine views of Newport's mansions. The club, organized in 1895, first leased land at this site, then purchased it in 1903, building its first purpose-built clubhouse c. 1903–07. This building was significantly damaged by the New England Hurricane of 1938.
