John Purnell Chatham
John Purnell Chatham (July 2, 1872 – October 3, 1914) was an American sailor serving in the United States Navy during Boxer Rebellion who received the Medal of Honor for bravery. Biography Chatham was born July 2, 1872, in Worcester County, Maryland and after entering the US Navy, Chatham was sent to China to fight in the Boxer Rebellion. He died October 3, 1914, and is buried in Parsons Cemetery in Salisbury, Maryland. Worcester County is the easternmost county of the U.S. state of Maryland. As of the 2020 census, the population was 52,460. Its county seat is Snow Hill. It is the only county of Maryland that borders the Atlantic Ocean, and the only county bordering both Delaware and Virginia. The county was named for Mary Arundell, the wife of Sir John Somerset, a son of Henry Somerset, 1st Marquess of Worcester. The Boxer Movement, or Boxer Rebellion, was a Chinese uprising from November 1899 to September 7, 1901, against foreign influence in areas such as trade, politics, religion and technology that occurred in China during the final years of the Manchu rule (Qing dynasty). The members of the Chinese Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists were simply called ''boxers'' by the Westerners due to the martial arts and calisthenics they practiced. It began as an anti-foreign, anti-imperialist, peasant-based movement that attacked foreigners who were building railroads and violating Feng shui. Christians who they felt were responsible for foreign domination of China were also targeted. In June 1900, the Boxers invaded Beijing and killed 230 non-Chinese.
