John Proby (c. 1639 – 14 November 1710) of Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire (now in Cambridgeshire) was an English lawyer and independent politician who sat in the English and British House of Commons at various times between 1693 and 1710. Early life Proby was baptized on 16 January 1639, the second son of Sir Heneage Proby and his wife Ellen Allen daughter of Edward Allen, of Finchley, Middlesex. He was admitted at Jesus College, Cambridge and at Middle Temple on 2 April 1657. In 1664, he was called to the bar. He was a bencher of his Inn in 1684. He was the grandson of Sir Peter Proby, Lord Mayor of London in 1622, and younger brother of Sir Thomas Proby, 1st Baronet, from whom he inherited Elton Hall in 1689. By 1691, he married Jane Cust, daughter of Sir Richard Cust, 1st Baronet of Blackfriars, Stamford, Lincolnshire. John Proby (c. 1698 – 15 March 1762) was an English Member of Parliament for Huntingdonshire (1722–27) and Stamford (1743–47). Life Proby was the son of William Proby of Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire and formerly of Fort St George, Madras, who was son of Charles Proby, and a remote heir of Sir Peter Proby through his cousin John Proby. John Proby died in 1710, then his daughter Frances in 1711, and William Proby inherited. He was also heir to his paternal grandfather, Emmanuel Proby who was the fourth son of Sir Peter Proby. Charles Proby was a close ally of Sir Edward Winter in the power struggles in Madras of the 1660s. He predeceased Dorothy his wife, who died in 1685; he is said to have been living in 1684. He had another son, Charles, who became rector of Tewin, and there was a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Gabriel Roberts at Fort St. George in 1687. John Proby, 1st Baron Carysfort KB PC (25 November 1720 – 18 October 1772) was a British Whig politician. Life He was the son of John Proby, of Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire, and his wife Jane, daughter of John Leveson-Gower, 1st Baron Gower. He was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge. Proby was returned to Parliament for Stamford in 1747, a seat he held until 1754, and then represented Huntingdonshire from 1754 to 1768. Carysfort served as a Lord of the Admiralty under the Duke of Devonshire in 1757 and under George Grenville from 1763 to 1765. In 1752 he was raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Baron Carysfort, of Carysfort in the County of Wicklow, and in 1758 he was admitted to the Irish Privy Council. In 1761 he was further honoured when he was made a Knight of the Order of the Bath. John Joshua Proby, 1st Earl of Carysfort, KP, PC, PC (Ire), FRS (12 August 1751 – 7 April 1828) was a British judge, diplomat, Whig politician and poet. Background and education Carysfort was the son of John Proby, 1st Baron Carysfort, and the Hon. Elizabeth, daughter of Joshua Allen, 2nd Viscount Allen. He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. Political and judicial career Carysfort succeeded his father as second Baron in 1772. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1779 and made a Knight of the Order of St Patrick in 1784. In 1789 he was admitted to the Irish Privy Council, created Earl of Carysfort in the Peerage of Ireland and appointed Joint Master of the Rolls in Ireland, which he remained until 1801. The office was then generally regarded as a sinecure.
