John Reed Porter
John Reed Porter (November 14, 1838 – October 15, 1923) was a recipient of the Medal of Honor, a military award presented by the United States Department of War to 18 Union Army soldiers who participated in the Great Locomotive Chase in 1862 during the American Civil War (1861–1865). He joined Union Army in 1861 and participated in the battles of Chickamauga, Stones River, Bentonville, and the campaigns of Chattanooga and Atlanta. At the end of the war he was a first lieutenant. Biography Porter was a native of Delaware County, Ohio. He joined the United States Army in 1861 as a private in Company G, 21st Ohio Infantry. In April 1862, he was to take part in a daring raid with 21 others (later known as "Andrews' Raiders" because they operated under the command of James J. Andrews). He overslept and missed out on the raid but was captured and imprisoned along with his fellow raiders within two weeks. John Porter was an English tax collector, portreeve for the town of Taunton in the West of England. He also served as one of the two Members of Parliament for the borough of Taunton in some parliaments of the late 14th century. Jonathan Christopher "Jon" Porter (born May 16, 1955) is an American politician who served as a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives, the first representative elected from the 3rd Congressional District of Nevada. He won re-election in the 2006 midterm election against Tessa Hafen by a 48%–47% margin. On November 4, 2008, after three consecutive terms, he was defeated by Nevada State Senator Dina Titus, a Democrat and professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. John Scott Porter (1801–1880) was an Irish biblical scholar and Unitarian minister. Life He was eldest son of William Porter (1774–1843), a Presbyterian minister, by his first wife, Mary, daughter of Charles Scott, born at Newtownlimavady, County Londonderry, Ireland on 31 December 1801; the barrister William Porter (1805–1880) was a younger brother, and the minister Classon Emmett Porter (1814–1885) a half-brother. After schools at Dirtagh and Derry, he was admitted as a student for the ministry under the care of Strabane presbytery. He took his arts course at the Belfast Academical Institution in 1817–19 and 1821–3, acting in the interim as tutor in a private family in County Kilkenny. John Arthur Porter (November 12, 1921 – June 15, 1979) was a Canadian sociologist from 1950 to the late 1970s. His work in the field of social stratification opened up new areas of inquiry for many sociologists in Canada. Porter was born in Vancouver and completed his education at the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom. There, he became interested in studies of social class. On returning to Canada he joined the faculty of Carleton University. He remained at Carleton as a professor, and later, as department chairman, dean and academic vice-president. John Addison Porter (March 15, 1822 – August 25, 1866) was an American professor of chemistry and physician. He is the namesake of the John Addison Porter Prize and was a founder of the Scroll and Key senior society of Yale University. John Porter (1751 – 27 July 1819) was an 18th-century Anglican bishop in Ireland. Porter was the son of Rev. Thomas Porter, perpetual curate of Northenden. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and Trinity College, Cambridge, matriculating in 1768, graduating B.A. ( 5th wrangler) 1773, M.A. 1776, D.D. ('' per lit. reg.'') 1792. He was ordained deacon on 6 June 1773 and priest on 18 December 1774 (both ordinations performed by John Hinchliffe, Bishop of Peterborough and Master of Trinity College), and became a Fellow of Trinity College in 1774. He was Boyle Lecturer in 1786, and Regius Professor of Hebrew from 1790 to 1795. He was appointed Archdeacon of Llandaff in 1789. John Porter (settler)
John Porter was an early colonist in New England and a signer of the Portsmouth Compact, establishing the first government in what became the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. He joined the Roxbury church with his wife Margaret in 1633, but few other records are found of him while in the Massachusetts Bay Colony until he became involved with John Wheelwright and Anne Hutchinson during what is known as the Antinomian Controversy. He and many others were disarmed for signing a petition in support of Wheelwright and were compelled to leave the colony. Porter joined a group of more than 20 men in signing the Portsmouth Compact for a new government, and they settled on Rhode Island where they established the town of Portsmouth. John Porter (born 11 September 1947, in Leeds, England) is an English musician and record producer. Biography He attended St Michael's School, Allerton Grange School, King's College, London, and Newcastle University. While at Newcastle, Porter met singer Bryan Ferry, and was part of his fledgling band The Gas Board. Ferry's later band Roxy Music had achieved success in the early 1970s, but having had some troubles with bass players, Ferry invited Porter on board to record the 1973 album ''For Your Pleasure'' and it's subsequent tour. Porter went on to serve as a record producer for many later albums for Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry. Porter is credited with the production of Liverpool's ''Watt 4'' album at Matrix Studios in 1979. He has since produced for The Smiths, Billy Bragg, The Blades, Microdisney, School of Fish, B. B. King, Los Lonely Boys, Buddy Guy, Ryan Adams, Missy Higgins and numerous other bands.
