John Pitman (journalist)
John Pitman (18 November 1939 – 14 February 2018) was an English journalist, television producer and documentary filmmaker. He began his on-screen career as a researcher on ''Braden's Week'' but later became known for his reporting work on the BBC2 documentary series '' Man Alive''. Biography Pitman was born in Whitecroft, in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, to Maudie (née Morse) and William Pitman. He attended Bexhill-on-Sea and then Cirencester Grammar Schools. He began his career in journalism with the ''Gloucestershire Echo'' and ''Brighton Argus'' newspapers before moving to the ''Daily Mail'' and then on to the BBC. His first on-screen role was as reporter on ''Braden's Week'' with Bernard Braden and Esther Rantzen. He was also known for reporting for the series '' The Big Time'', an edition of which launched the career of the singer Sheena Easton and he presented a follow up programme ''Sheena Easton - the Making of a Star''. Whitecroft is a village in the Forest of Dean in west Gloucestershire, England. It is located in-between Bream and Yorkley. Whitecroft comes under the postal district of Lydney. Just Another Day (TV Series)
Just Another Day is a BBC documentary series, shown over twenty thirty minute episodes. The series follows John Pitman observing a typical day in the life of places, businesses and institutions that are considered part of the British way of life. The episodes consisted of Pitman (who was always off-camera) shadowing a member of staff in the particular profession whilst he/she went about their particular job, combined with "fly on the wall" segments of other aspects and challenges of the profession (with Pitman narrating). The basic format of ''Just Another Day'' was later developed and expanded in the late 1990s with the so-called "docusoap" (notable BBC examples included ''Airline'' and ''Driving School'') which serialised the events and lives of employees within a particular profession or situation. ''That's Life!'' was a satirical TV consumer affairs programme on the BBC, at its height regularly reaching audiences of fifteen to twenty million, and receiving 10–15,000 letters a week. The series broadcast on BBC1 for twenty-one years, from May 26, 1973, until June 19, 1994. Format ''That's Life'' was a magazine which mixed serious and light-hearted items combined with satire in a studio-based format with film inserts, devised by Peter Chafer, John Lloyd and Esther Rantzen, it was presented and produced by Esther Rantzen with various teams of reporters and contributors. ''Holiday'' is a British television programme, which aired mainly on BBC One, and sometimes on BBC Two. It is the longest running travel review series on UK television, showing every year from 1969 until its demise in 2007. Overview The programme began in 1969 as ''Holiday 69'', and until the 1990s the year was included in the title in this way. The first presenter was Cliff Michelmore, who remained with the series until 1986. In 1974, competitor network ITV launched its own travel show, '' Wish You Were Here...?'', which ran until 2003. Jessie Matthews
Jessie Margaret Matthews (11 March 1907 – 19 August 1981) was an English actress, dancer and singer of the 1920s and 1930s, whose career continued into the post-war period. After a string of hit stage musicals and films in the mid-1930s, Matthews developed a following in the USA, where she was dubbed "The Dancing Divinity". Her British studio was reluctant to let go of its biggest name, however, which resulted in offers for her to work in Hollywood being repeatedly rejected. Ronnie Knight (born 20 January 1934) is an English former nightclub owner and convicted criminal. On 4 January 1995, 16 days prior to his 61st birthday, Knight was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for handling £314,813 in stolen money from the 1983 £6m armed robbery at a Security Express depot in Shoreditch, East London. Early life Ronald Knight was born on 20 January 1934 in Hoxton, London Borough of Hackney, the son of James and Nellie. Knight was responsible for minor infractions of the law when he was young, whereas his brothers John and James were involved in more significant crimes.
