John Phifer Farm
John Phifer Farm is a historic farm complex and national historic district located near Cleveland, Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The Jacob Phifer House was built in the 1850s, and is a two-story, rectangular, weatherboarded log dwelling. The oldest building is the John Phifer House, built about 1819, and is a small two-story log dwelling. Other contributing resources are the double-pen log barn (c. 1858), tool shed (1930s), garage (1920s / 1930s), granary and corn crib (c. 1858), spring house (c. 1930), blacksmith shop (c. 1925), two chicken houses (1930s, c. 1940), log chicken coop (1930s), wood shed (c. 1930), smokehouse (c. 1858), privy (c. 1930), scalding vat (c. 1935), log tobacco barn (c. 1895), and the farm landscape. Cleveland, North Carolina
Cleveland is a town in the Cleveland Township of Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 871 at the 2010 census. History The town dates from 1831 but was not incorporated until 1833. The first post office in Cleveland, Cowansville, was established in 1831. By 1850, prior to the US Civil War and the completion of the Western Carolina Railroad, the town was named Rowan Mills. Rowan Mills was named for the five story flour mill that Osborn Giles Foard owned in Cleveland. The Rowan Mills Post Office served the area north of the rail line and extended into Scotch Irish Township after the Civil War in 1870. The town and post office kept the name Rowan Mills until 1876 when it was renamed Third Creek Station. In the 1880 U.S. Census, there were 17 families and 89 persons living in the Village of Third Creek Station. A granary is a storehouse or room in a barn for threshed grain or animal feed. Ancient or primitive granaries are most often made of pottery. Corn Crib
A corn crib or corncrib is a type of granary used to dry and store corn. It may also be known as a cornhouse or corn house. Overview After the harvest and while still on the cob, corn is placed in the crib either with or without the husk. The typical corn crib has slats in its walls to allow air to circulate through the corn, both allowing it to dry initially and helping it stay dry. Spring House
A spring house, or springhouse, is a small building, usually of a single room, constructed over a spring. While the original purpose of a springhouse was to keep the spring water clean by excluding fallen leaves, animals, etc., the enclosing structure was also used for refrigeration before the advent of ice delivery and, later, electric refrigeration. The water of the spring maintains a constant cool temperature inside the spring house throughout the year. Food that would otherwise spoil, such as meat, fruit, or dairy products, could be kept there, safe from animal depredations as well.
