Winchelsea (UK Parliament Constituency)
Winchelsea was a parliamentary constituency in Sussex, which elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons from 1366 until 1832, when it was abolished by the Great Reform Act. History Boundaries Winchelsea was a Cinque Port, rather than a parliamentary borough, but the difference was purely a nominal one, and it was considered an egregious example of a rotten borough. The constituency consisted of the town and parish of Winchelsea, once a market town and port but by the 19th century much reduced in importance, a mile-and-a-half inland with its harbour destroyed. In 1831, the population of the constituency was estimated at 772, and the town contained 148 houses. John Peyton (soldier)
Sir John Peyton (1544–1630) was an English soldier, MP and administrator, as well as the Governor of Jersey. He was born in Knowlton, Kent to John Peyton (died 1558) and Dorothy Peyton, who was the daughter of John Tyndale. He entered Parliament in 1572 as MP for King's Lynn and was re-elected to the same seat in 1584 and 1593. He was knighted in 1586 and served under Robert Dudley. He was Lieutenant-Governor of Bergen op Zoom from 1586 to 1587 and was a colonel "in the forces for the defence of the queen's person against the threatened attack of the Spanish Armada" in 1588. He was Sheriff of Norfolk for 1588. He served as a deputy lieutenant of Cambridgeshire under Roger North in 1596 and MP for Middlesex in 1597. He was appointed lieutenant of the Tower of London from 1597 to 1603, during which time he gave kind attention to Sir Walter Raleigh when he was imprisoned. Sir John Peyton, 1st Baronet
Sir John Peyton, 1st Baronet (1561 – December 1616) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1593 and 1611. Biography Peyton was the eldest surviving son of Robert Peyton of Isleham and his wife, Elizabeth Rich, daughter of Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich of Rochford Hall and Leigh's Priory, Essex. He was a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for the Isle of Ely from about 1584. He succeeded to the family estates on the death of his father in 1590. From about 1591, he was a JP for Cambridgeshire. In 1593, he was elected Member of Parliament for Cambridgeshire. He was High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire from 1593 to 1594. He became Deputy Lieutenant in 1596 and was knighted on 1 November 1596. In 1604, he was elected again as MP for Cambridgeshire. He was created baronet on 22 May 1611. John Peyton (died 1635)
John Peyton (1579–1635), of Wells, Norfolk, was an English politician. He was the son of Sir John Peyton (1544–1630), Governor of Jersey and Lieutenant of the Tower of London. He was a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Castle Rising in 1601. He wrote an extant account of his travels as a young man. ''A Relation of the State of Polonia'' is a manuscript work produced between 1598 and 1603 on Polish affairs. John Peyton (fisherman)
John Peyton Sr. (1749–1829) was an English-born fisherman and trapper in the Colony of Newfoundland. He was born in Christchurch, Dorset and came to Newfoundland in 1770. He lived in Fogo, where he was employed in cod fishing, until around 1775. He later spent his summers at Exploits and then his winters at Lower Sandy Point on the Bay of Exploits. He fished for salmon and was involved in the fur trade; he also owned his own schooner. In 1788, Peyton married Ann Galton. His wife and children remained at Dorset in England until 1812. Both his wife and daughter died that year and Peyton subsequently brought his son John to Newfoundland to join him as a partner in business. In 1819, he took part in an expedition led by his son John Peyton Jr., which ended with the capture of a Beothuk woman named Demasduwit and the killing of her husband Nonosbawsut, who was attempting to negotiate her release. Sir John Strutt Peyton, (1786–1838) was a captain in the Royal Navy. Lineage John Strutt Peyton, born in London on 14 January 1786, was the son of William Peyton of the Navy Office, grandson of Admiral Joseph Peyton, and great-grandson of Commodore Edward Peyton. His father's three brothers, too, were all in the navy; one of them, John, who died a rear-admiral in 1809, was captain of the ''Defence'' in the Battle of the Nile. John Wynne William Peyton, Baron Peyton of Yeovil, (13 February 1919 – 22 November 2006) was a British Conservative politician. He was Member of Parliament for Yeovil for over 31 years, from 1951 to 1983, and an early and leading member of the Conservative Monday Club. He served as Minister of Transport (later renamed Minister of Transport Industries in the Department of the Environment) from 1970 to 1974. John Stephens Peyton (born July 28, 1964) is an American businessman and politician who is currently president of Gate Petroleum. He served as Mayor of Jacksonville, Florida from 2003 to 2011, when he was succeeded by Alvin Brown. He was the second Republican to be elected to the position since 1888.
